This is the third accolade for the Wildcats this season
MANHATTAN, Kan. – The K-State women's rowing team 2v8+ has been named the Big 12 Boat of the Week as announced by the conference Thursday (April 24). After three races at the SIRA Championship on April 18-19 the boat earned a silver medal.
Â
"We're proud of this boat for the progress they have made this season. They have done a good job learning from week to week and coming together as a unit," head coach Patrick Sweeney said. "They stayed focus from race to race and did well this weekend. We're seeing each boat learn how to race hard while also rowing technically clean."
Â
The crew most recently competed with a lineup consisting of junior coxswain Leah Roane, senior Jayden Brandt, junior Makenzie Storm, sophomore Regan Reker, junior Emma Johnson, senior Madelyn Barrett, sophomores Anna Guhr and Harmony Leiker and freshman Bryn Pawlik
Â
At the SIRA Championship, the boat competed in time trials and semifinals on Friday. With a win in their semi at 7:22.21, the boat earned a spot in Saturday's 'A' finals. In finals, the boat recorded a final time of 7:05.9.
Â
In the last race on April 13 at the Creighton Duel, the boat won with a time of 7:10.4, six seconds ahead of the Bluejays. Prior to that, the 2v8+ finished runner-up in the 'C' final at the Sarasota 2k on March 29.
Â
The Cats previously earned two Boat of the Week accolades this season. On April 16 the 3v8+, an all-novice boat, earned the honor after a victory at the Creighton Duel. The 1v4+ claimed the first award of the season on March 19 after three dominant wins in the Hornet Invitational.
Â
"Seeing our athletes get recognized for their work is something we always appreciate. Our team has worked hard for everything they have accomplished this year, and we're excited to see what is next for each of our boats," Sweeney said.
