Bernat Named Big 12 Women’s Golfer of the Year; Bert Earns All-Big 12 Honors

MANHATTAN, Kan. – A pair of seniors who have led Kansas State to its first NCAA Regional appearance in eight years, Carla Bernat has been named the Big 12 Women's Golfer of the Year, and Sophie Bert joined Bernat on the All-Big 12 Team, the conference office announced Thursday.

Bernat became the second player in program history to earn the league's top honor following Christine Boucher in 2003-04. It is her second-straight season earning All-Big 12 honors, joining Boucher (2001-02, 2002-03, 2003-04) as the only two golfers in program history to earn multiple All-Big 12 accolades.

Bert's inclusion on the All-Big 12 Team gives the Wildcats two all-conference women's golfers in the same season for the first time in program history. A transfer from East Tennessee State, Bert picked up all-conference honors for a second-straight season as she was named to the All-Southern Conference team a year ago.

"We are really proud to have two players named to the All-Big 12 Team," head coach Stew Burke said. "This is a testament to a great season for both players. As a program, we couldn't have two better representatives on this team, and I know they have an extremely bright future ahead of them both in the postseason and in the professional ranks."

Finishing at No. 23 – the top Big 12 player in the National Collegiate Golf Rankings – Bernat holds a scoring average of 70.09 this season, which is nearly a shot per round better than the school record she set a year ago. She also holds the top career scoring average in school history at 70.49, nearly four shots per round better than the current record.

A native of Castellon, Spain, Bernat never finished outside of the top 20 in any of her 11 events this season and did not finish a tournament over par. Her two victories this season have come at the season-opening Powercat Invitational held at Colbert Hills in September in addition to claiming the MountainView Collegiate in Tucson, Arizona, in early March. Additionally, Bernat finished in second place at the Rainbow Wahine Invitational in October and at the Big 12 Championship.

Her best 54-hole score this year was an 11-under par 205 at MountainView Collegiate to tie for third in school history, while she also shot a 206 during the Westbrook Invitational to tie for fifth in school history. Over her two-year career at K-State, Bernat holds eight of the top 16 54-hole scores and nine of the top 20 rounds in program history.

"Carla continues to demonstrate why she is not just the best player in our conference, but one of the best players in the country," Burke said. "To be named to the All-Big 12 Team in back-to-back years is a special achievement, and receiving the Big 12 Golfer of the Year honor is a great reward for her fine play all season."

A product of Deurle, Belgium, Bert holds a 72.75 scoring average this season to rank third in program history. She has produced seven top-10 finishes in her 11 starts, including a pair of top-five showings. Bert tied the school's 54-hole score with a 204 to tie for second place at the Westbrook Invitational, an event she carded a 9-under par 63 in the second round to set the program record.

Bert became the first player in program history to win an individual conference championship as she turned in a 54-hole score of 2-under par 211, the only player to finish under par and the best three-round total in K-State's conference championship history. She began the final round in a tie for 14th place but rose to the top spot thanks to a performance of 5-under par 66, the best round ever by a K-State player in the conference championship and tied for the sixth-lowest round overall.

"For Sophie to be named to her first All-Big 12 team is a huge honor," Burke said. "It is well deserved, given her Big 12 Championship win. She has really embraced the K-State culture, and there is no better sendoff at the conference level than this award."

Bernat and Bert lead the Wildcats into the 2025 NCAA Lexington Regional, next Monday through Wednesday, at Keene Trace Golf Club in Nicholasville, Kentucky.
