Chogsomjav Named ITA Central Region Most Improved Player

Jun 10, 2025 | Tennis

The sophomore is the second Wildcat in four seasons to earn the honor

MANHATTAN, Kan.- K-State's Maralgoo Chogsomjav earned an ITA Regional honor, named the ITA Central Region Most Improved Player, announced on Tuesday (June 10) by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association.

"Congrats to Maggie on earning this recognition. I'm glad the other coaches in our region saw Maggie's development as well in her first three semesters at K-State," head coach Jordan Smith said.

Chogsomjav, a sophomore from Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, is the most recent Wildcat to earn an ITA Regional Award. The last 'Cat to receive similar honors was assistant coach Maria Linares during her senior season in 2022, being awarded the Cissie Leary Sportsmanship Award as well as the Most Improved Senior. In 2023, K-State was named the Community Service Award winner.

During her sophomore campaign, Chogsomjav was also named to the 2025 All-Big 12 Second Team Singles and was named Big 12 Player of the Week on February 25.

"As soon as Maggie arrived on campus we knew she would be special, but would take some time to develop her potential," Smith said. "Which isn't an easy ask of kids these days to wait for their turn to get them better long-term. Maggie trusted and believed in the process from the beginning."

Throughout the year Chogsomjav went 20-11 in singles play with an 8-3 Big 12 record. In two seasons she achieved 30 singles wins for a 30-14 (13-5) career record.

She ended the season playing in the no. 1 spot, going 2-2 in the final regular season and Big 12 Championship matches. The rest of the spring she split between the no. 2 and 3 courts, going undefeated in the no. 3 spot at 7-0.

"This season is proof that her patience and dedication is paying off. I'm thankful that I have a great staff and support staff that always help Maggie reach her best." Smith added.

Chogsomjav faced 12 three-set matches for an 8-2 record, a perfect 5-0 against conference opponents. Playing in the second-most matches on the team, she faced four consecutive three-set matches in March at the start of Big 12 play going 3-0 with one unfinished.

She encountered five ranked opponents going 1-2, victorious on April 11 against Iowa State's then-ranked #119 Anna Supapitch Kuearum, in her last match to three sets at 1-6, 6-4, 6-1.
