Lindstrom’s 63 Highlights K-State’s First Day in Lincoln
Sep 22, 2025 | Men's Golf
LINCOLN, Neb. – Kansas State senior men's golfer Alex Lindstrom posted a first-round score of 8-under par 63 – tied for the second-lowest round in school history – to lead the Wildcats on Monday through the first 36 holes of the Git-R-Done Invitational at the par-71, 7,077-yard Firethorn Golf Club.
Lindstrom's round was the best by a Wildcat since Ben Kern fired a 63 in the 2004 Nelson Invitational, and it was one shy of the school record posted by Don Bishop in 1948. Backing that round up with a score of 2-under par 69 in the afternoon, Lindstrom enters Tuesday's final round with a two-shot advantage on the individual leaderboard at 10-under par 132.
As a team, the Wildcats are in second place at 7-under par 561. K-State tallied the second-best score in the first round at 9-under par 275 and held its position following a score of a 2-over par 286 in the afternoon. The Wildcats are one shot ahead of third-place Iowa State, while homesteading Nebraska is 12 shots clear of the field at 19-under par.
"There were definitely a lot of positives from today," head coach Grant Robbins said. "As a team, we played solid, but we had a couple of guys struggle with some big numbers and were not able to get that fourth score. There is a lot of golf left. We don't have to do anything special. We need to stick to the game plan, keep chipping away and have a good finish tomorrow."
Lindstrom's near record-setting first round began innocently with a birdie on No. 1 and a bogey on No. 2. From there, the Halmstad, Sweden, native went bogey free with eight birdies – including four straight to open the back 9 and one on No. 18 – en route to just the seventh round in the 60s during his K-State career.
A transfer from Hutchinson Community College, Lindstrom came back with another sub-70 round in his second 18 of the day thanks to four birdies in the first 10 holes before parring out his final six holes.
"Alex was incredible today, but it's not a surprise," Robbins said. "He hits so many quality golf shots, and today he was able to make a few putts. I was really proud of him in round two. It's not easy sometimes to follow up such a low round, but he hung in there and made a couple of gutsy pars down the stretch to help the team."
Lindstrom is joined in the top 15 by three other players in Oliver Toyer, Fionn Dobbin and Ville Virkkala.
Competing as an individual, Toyer is tied for seventh place at 3-under par 139. The Cambridgeshire, England, product tallied three birdies over his first 18 holes with his lone blemish coming in the form of a bogey on No. 17. In his second round, the freshman was at 4-under par through the first 15 holes, but he dropped three shots toward the end of the day with a double-bogey on No. 16 and a bogey on No. 17.
Dobbin, a sophomore from Lisburn, Northern Ireland, is tied for ninth place at 2-under par 140. He started the day with a score of 2-under par 69 thanks to four birdies before posting an even-par round in the afternoon.
Virkkala is one shot back and tied for 14th place. The freshman from Espoo, Finland, also carded four birdies in the first round en route to a score of 1-under par 70. He came back with an even-par second round thanks to pars on each of his final nine holes of the day.
Senior Shea Harmeson and sophomore Erik Sabelström Holmberg are tied for 53rd place with a 36-hole score of 7-over par 149. Sabelström Holmberg began his first round with birdies on each of his first three holes and another on No. 6, but he was unable to carry that momentum forward.
The final round of the Git-R-Done Invitational is slated for Tuesday as the Wildcats will be part of the final groups beginning on the first tee at 9 a.m. Live results can be followed on SCOREBOARD powered by Clippd.
