BLUFFTON, S.C. – With a final-round score of even-par 288 on Monday, the Kansas State men's golf team rose two spots to finish in a tie for 12th place in the Colleton River Collegiate, held at the par-72, 7,403-yard Pete Dye Course of the Colleton River Plantation Club.
The Wildcats finished with a 54-hole score of 10-over par 874 as they tied with Iowa State and finished two shots back of 11th-place Missouri.
"I was really proud of how the guys responded today in the final round. They came out and played very solid in the windiest conditions of the week," said associate head coach Cullen Carstens, who filled in this week as head coach Grant Robbins tended to a personal matter. "Overall, it was a disappointing week for us as our execution just wasn't as sharp as we needed it to be in the first two rounds, so we struggled to build any momentum throughout the day on Sunday. Looking ahead, we are excited to get back home, get back to work, and show what we're capable of for the rest of this spring."
K-State was led on Monday by sophomore Fionn Dobbin, who turned in his second-straight round of 1-under par 71 with three birdies on the day. A product of Lisburn, Northern Ireland, Dobbin now has five under-par rounds this season. He rose 17 spots on Monday to finish in a tie for 44th place at 4-over par 220.
Freshman Ville Virkkala led the Wildcats over the three rounds by tying for 28th place at 1-over par 217 following a final-round total of 1-over par 73. He finished one shot ahead of senior Shea Harmeson, who tied for 33rd place while competing as an individual after recording a final-round score of 2-over par 74.
Like Dobbin, Alex Lindstrom and Oliver Toyer each made a 10-plus spot improvement on the individual leaderboard after each turned in a score of even-par 72. Lindstrom moved up 13 spots over the final 18 holes thanks in part to an eagle on the par-5 2nd. The senior finished in a tie for 48th place with a three-round total of 5-over par 221. Toyer matched three bogeys with a trip of birdies as the freshman improved his score by two shots in every round. He concluded the event in a tie for 57th place at 6-over par 222.
Senior JP Roller carded a final-round total of 4-over par 76 and tied for 64th place at 8-over par 224.
No. 50 Kentucky earned a one-shot victory over Ohio State with a 54-hole score of 11-under par 853. Memphis' Diego Do Patrocinio Lourenco improved two spots during the final round to claim medalist honors at 10-under par 206.
K-State returns to the state of South Carolina, March 15-17, when the Wildcats compete in the Michael A. Marino Classic held at the Dunes Club in Myrtle Beach.
