The men's team was last ranked in the top-10 in 1993 at #8
MANHATTAN, Kan. – The K-State men's track and field team tops the NCAA after the second week of the indoor season, according to the USTFCCCA national poll released on Tuesday (February 3). Track becomes the first K-State team to be ranked #1 in 14 years, since the football team in the BCS standings in November 2012, previously #1 in the coaches' poll in 1998.
"Obviously it's exciting for the program and the K-State community," head coach Travis Geopfert said. "I'm proud of everyone within our program. We're just going to keep focusing on the process and have fun doing it!"
The men moved up two spots from week one with 142.93 points, surpassing Tennessee at #2 with 130.10 points and Oregon at #3 with 124.17. The women jumped up 19 spots to #15 with 60.30 points, the third highest ranked team in the Big 12 Conference, behind only BYU and Texas Tech.
In the #EventSquad rankings, the men are also #1 in the long and triple jump, as well as #3 in the high jump and #5 in the weight throw. Event squad rankings are calculated using the team's top four highest performers, and their personal bests, in an event to calculate a group average.
In the men's triple jump, sophomore Selva Prabhu (16.63m), juniors Trevon Hamer (16.47m) and Aaron Antoine (16.40m) and senior Jhavor Bennett (15.73m) have an average distance of 16.31m (53' 6.25"), compared to the second-best team, Ole Miss, with an average of 15.14m, a difference of almost four feet.
Junior Tah Chikomba (8.09m), sophomore Uroy Ryan (7.87), redshirt freshman Croix DaCunha (7.83m) and freshman Mattix DaCunha (7.14m) have an average distance of 7.73m (25' 4.5"), ahead of Texas at 7.51m.
In the high jump, freshman Alan Hanna, senior Devin Loudermilk, M. DaCunha and freshman Dorian Charles are #3 in the high jump with an average clearance of 2.09m. In the weight throw, seniors Gary Moore Jr. and Kade McCall and juniors Ricardo Hayles and Riley Marx have an average throw of 20.11m at #5.
The women's team also made their mark in the event rankings, #2 in the high, long and triple jumps.
The team success comes after the Wildcats hosted the DeLoss Dodds Invitational (January 30-31) where multiple men performed marks in the NCAA and World rankings top-10. The team will compete again on February 13-14 in the Tyson Invitational in Fayetteville, Ark., at the Randall Tyson Indoor Track.
