The K-State men have the best team finish and points scored in program history
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The K-State men's track and field team finished 4th at the NCAA Indoor Championship on Saturday (March 14) after scoring 24 points at the Randal Tyson Track Center. On the women's side junior Daniela Wamokpego was crowned the triple jump national champion after leaping to a new K-State school record.
After two days, the men's team finished tied for 4th, the women's team in 7th place with 25 points, a total of 12 NCAA First Team All-America honors for the Wildcats. It marks the men's highest team finish and the most points scored in program history.
"The men, our first trophy in school history. Again, there's ups and downs to all of it, but they continue to compete, continue to battle and to win a trophy, to be top-4 in the country, I don't have words right now," head coach Travis Geopfert said.
The women's 7th place team finish matches the 2000 team that also scored 25 points. Only the women's 2016 team has scored more points in program history with 26.
Arkansas' men won the national championship with 73.5 points while Georgia's women claimed the title with 53 points. K-State is one of six schools with both the men's and women's teams to finish in the Championship top-10; Arkansas, Oregon, Florida, BYU and South Carolina.
In her sixth and final attempt, Wamokpego jumped 13.84m (45' 5") to clinch the gold medal. That jump surpasses the previous school record of 13.75m (45' 1.50") set by Shardia Lawrence in 2017. It was also a new lifetime personal best by 10 inches.
Wamokpego is the first K-State women's national champion since the 2016 season when two Wildcats were crowned, Akela Jones in the high jump and Dani Winters in the shot put.
Sophomore Selva Prabhu was named national runner-up, earning a silver medal in the men's triple jump with a new school record leap of 17.05m (55' 11.25"). He surpassed the previous record of 17.03m (55' 10.5") from Vince Parette in 1980, the jump almost a foot and a half farther than his previous best.
Prabhu is the first Wildcats men's runner-up since 2008 when Scott Sellers finished 2nd in the high jump while him and junior Tah Chikomba, the bronze medalist in the men's long jump, earned the men's team first bronze and silver medals in one season for the first time since 2004 when Christian Smith was runner-up in the 800 meters and Kyle Lancaster finished 3rd in the high jump.
Junior Aaron Antoine, during his first season competing in the triple jump, finished 5th for First Team All-America honors at 16.60m (54' 5.5"). With a new personal best distance by over seven inches, he holds the no. 4 best jump in the all-time top-10.
Junior Trevon Hamer finished in 8th place with a jump of 16.33m (53' 7"). Hamer adds NCAA First Team All-America honors to his trophy case, previously earning four First Team honors in the NJCAA in the past two seasons at Barton Community College.
Prabhu, Antoine and Hamer collected a total of 13 points, the first time one team had three men reach the triple jump podium since Florida in 2011 when they collected 22 points.
Also in the women's triple jump, freshman Destini Smith was named a First Team All-American with a 5th place finish, also a new personal best by a foot at 13.66m (44' 9.75"), and now the no. 3 best jump in the K-State indoor records.
Senior Sharie Enoe tied for 4th place in the women's high jump at 1.85m (6' 0.75") to finish with First Team honors for a consecutive season. Last season Enoe tied for 8th after clearing the same height at 1.85m.
During day one of the NCAA Indoor Championship, K-State had six First Team All-Americans:
Tah Chikomba, 3rd; 8.15m (26' 9") (long jump)
Kade McCall, 8th; 22.70m (74' 5.75") (weight throw)
Vanessa Mercera, 7th; 4,310 points (pentathlon)
Chisom Nwafor, 7th; 6.37m (20' 10.75") (long jump)
Uroy Ryan, 5th; 8.04m (26' 4.5") (long jump)
Maud Zeffou-Poaty, 6th; 6.37m (20' 10.75") (long jump)
The Wildcats will now look toward the outdoor season set for April 3-4 at the Stanford Invitational in Stanford, Calif., at Cobb Track and Angell Field.
