Wildcats Back on the Road for Conference Matchups

K-State will face first two Big 12 road matches this season at Colorado and Texas Tech
MANHATTAN, Kan.- The K-State women's tennis team continues the Big 12 Conference schedule hitting the road for the first time in a month, starting on Friday (March 6) facing Colorado in Boulder, Colo., at the Meadows Club.
K-State (4-4, 1-1 Big 12) will face the Colorado Buffaloes (9-3, 1-1 Big 12) for the first time since 2018 with a match set for 7 p.m., CT. In the last five meetings going back to 2011, the Wildcats are 1-4, including one win in Boulder in 2015 with a 4-0 sweep.
The Cats will then take on #34 Texas Tech (11-3, 2-0 Big 12) on Sunday (March 8) at 12 p.m. at the McLeod Tennis Center in Lubbock, Texas. The two teams did not meet last season, the first time since the second half of the spring 2019-20 season was canceled. The Cats have not defeated Tech at home in over 20 years, previously dropping the match 5-2 on March 9, 2024.
In the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) rankings from Tuesday (March 3), Maralgoo Chogsomjav and Martaa Chogsomjav jumped in the doubles rankings to #45. Facing the Red Raiders the duo will face a ranked pair, #55 Yekaterina Dmitrichenko and Hailey Murphy.
In the first weekend of Big 12 play, K-State split the weekend falling short to Cincinnati 4-2 on February 27 before clinching a 4-1 win over West Virginia on March 1.
The Chogsomjav sisters went undefeated in both doubles and singles matches to start conference play, altogether going 6-0 over two days, including sweeping Cincinnati's Anastasija Arsic and Rozalia Gruszczynska 6-0 on the no. 1 court.
Against the Bearcats' Gruszczynska, Martaa, a freshman, battled into three sets after a 6-0 first set start, eventually finding success at 6-0, 4-6, 6-3. Maralgoo, a junior, faced off against Audrey Moutama of West Virginia with two tiebreaker sets. Starting off at 7-6 (7-4), she had to fight back from being down in the second for a 7-6 (7-4), 7-6 (7-2) victory.
During that win over the Mountaineers, freshman Diana Smolinska was part of two crucial match ups, with partner Varvara Bernovich they won on the no. 2 court over Lyla Byers and Moutama 7-5 to clinch the doubles point. Smolinska also won the clinching singles match in three sets over Zuzana Kudlackova, 4-6, 6-1, 6-4.
