K-State secures a win over Colorado in first match up since 2018
BOULDER, Colo.- The K-State women's tennis team secured a consecutive Big 12 win on Friday (March 6) and the first conference match on the road in a tight 4-3 decision over Colorado at the Meadows Club. For a consecutive year the Wildcats have collected a win in the first road match of the Big 12 slate.
K-State (5-4, 2-1 Big 12) has won consecutive doubles points since the start of conference play, using the first point momentum over Colorado (9-4, 1-2 Big 12) in singles play. This marks the first Wildcats victory over the Buffaloes since 2018, a match also set in Boulder, and the second straight conference loss for Colorado.
The Cats' #45 ranked doubles pair, junior Maralgoo Chogsomjav and freshman Martaa Chogsomajv, won their fifth match in a row defeating Aya El Sayed and Pia Rebec 6-1 in the no. 1 spot. Freshman Sasha Kyselova and sophomore Chanel Rustemova won their first match together in a month, the first in the no. 3 position, with a 6-4 advantage over Ema Bubalo and Anya Nelson.
Freshmen Sasha Kyselova and Diana Smolinska fell short in the no. 2 spot against Lera Alexin and Rixt van der Werff, 3-6.
The deciding point came down to Rustemova in the no. 5 position as the last match to start. Competing against Heidi Crncan, she secured her first win at 6-3, 6-4 after going unfinished in the last three matches. It marks her first victory since February 13 against Wichita State and also just the second Big 12 win of her career.
Kyselova and Bernovich both won their first conference matches as well in straight sets. In the no. 3 spot, Kyselova faced Rebec with a close first set before securing the win by leaving her opponent almost scoreless in the next at 6-4, 6-1.
Bernovich competed against Nelson in the no. 5 position where she clinched a straight sets match at 6-4, 6-3. It's her first win in four matches after going unfinished in two during the previous home stand.
After going undefeated the previous weekend, the Chogsomjav sisters both dropped their singles battles, including Maralgoo in three sets. Battling El Sayed in the no. 1 spot, Maralgoo won a high scoring first set tiebreaker at 10-8 but started to lose steam in the following sets, only scoring a couple points to finish her match 7-6 (10-8), 2-6, 3-6.
Martaa came up short in her first match in three weeks while facing van der Werff in the no. 2 position. After losing the first set 3-6, Martaa could not regain her footing with a 3-6, 2-6 final, marking just her third loss through the first nine matches of the spring.
Previously encountering consecutive three-set matches, Smolinska dropped her match against Alexin in two low scoring sets at 2-6, 2-6 in the no. 4 spot.
K-State continues the weekend on the road on Sunday (March 8) against #34 Texas Tech (11-4, 2-1 Big 12) at 12 p.m. at McLeod Tennis Center. The ranked Red Raiders just lost their first conference match of the season to #28 Oklahoma State, 4-1.

"I'm so proud of our group tonight. That's a great win on the road for us. It's tough playing here with the altitude and having to use different equipment. Despite those challenges, our team continued to believe in winning and that's really awesome."
On the team's mindset before the next match…
"Definitely going to celebrate this feeling before our quick turnaround playing in Lubbock on Sunday. They're a strong team and we need to be ready."
