WEST POINT, Miss. – The Kansas State men's golf team put together a two-round total of 8-over par 584 on Monday to reside in eighth place in the Mossy Oak Collegiate held at the par-72, 7,212-yard Mossy Oak Golf Club.
The Wildcats opened the event with a score of 5-over par 293 before shaving off two strokes during the afternoon round. K-State enters Tuesday's final round four shots back of the top five as only three squads in the 19-team field are currently under par.
"It was kind of an up and down day for us," head coach Grant Robbins said. "The course was playing difficult with tucked pins and extremely firm greens. Alex (Lindstrom) and Shea (Harmeson) came up big and are keeping us in the hunt. The guys showed a lot of resiliency today. We just have to go out tomorrow and execute a little better on our approach shots and not try and force anything."
K-State is led by senior Alex Lindstrom, who was one of 19 players in the 104-man field to shoot under par on Monday. The Halmstad, Sweden, native is tied for 13th place at 1-under par 143 thanks to a score of 3-under par 69 over his first 18 holes. It was Lindstrom's team-leading seventh round in the 60s this season as he went bogey free and 2-under par on the front 9 in addition to three birdies in a four-hole stretch to begin the back 9.
Another senior, Shea Harmeson, produced a red-figure score as he posted a 2-under par 70 in the second round, a six-shot improvement from the morning to fly 34 spots up the leaderboard. The Traverse City, Michigan, product was on fire over Nos. 12 through 17 by recording five birdies and a par over that six-hole stretch. He opens the final round in a tie for 35th place at 2-over par 146.
Freshman Oliver Toyer is two shots back of Lindstrom and in a tie for 28th place at 1-over par 145, recording a score of 1-over par 73 in the morning before shooting even par in the afternoon.
Sophomore Fionn Dobbin and freshman Ville Virkkala round out the Wildcat scoring lineup at 7-over par 151 and 9-over par 153, respectively. Dobbin is tied for 70th, while Virkkala is seven spots behind. Playing as an individual, JP Roller is tied for 62nd place at 6-over par 150.
No. 15 Ole Miss holds a nine-shot lead over in-state rival and host school Mississippi State at 17-under par 559. Tom Fischer of Ole Miss and Lukas Boandl of Rice are tied for the individual lead with a 36-hole score of 6-under par 138.
