CAREER: A former walk-on who began his career seeing time on special teams before starts each of the final 27 games over the 2022 and 2023 seasons.
2023: Started all 13 games at center en route to All-Big 12 Honorable Mention accolades from the league’s coaches... Was not called for a penalty among his 940 offensive snaps... Helped the Wildcats rank in the top 10 in school history in 32 game or season categories, including a school-record 30 passing touchdowns, No. 2 rankings in offensive yards per game (445.2) and first downs (310), and a No. 3 showing in total yards (5,788)... K-State finished the season in the top 30 nationally in 11 offensive categories, including scoring (10th – 37.1 points per game), rushing (11th – 204.1 yards per game), third down conversions (11th – 47.9%), rushing touchdowns (12th – 32) and first downs (12th – 310)... Voted a team captain for the 2023 season... Earned Second Team Academic All-Big 12 honors.
2022: Started all 14 games at center – the first starts of his career – as he picked up All-Big 12 Honorable Mention accolades... In the middle of an offensive unit that averaged 208.3 rushing yards per game to rank 15th in the nation, the Wildcats’ best mark since 2016 (231.8) and ranking since 2003 (No. 9)... Also helped K-State rank third in school history with 5.12 rushing yards per carry, fourth with 2,916 rushing yards and 10th with 32 rushing touchdowns... K-State also ranked second in school history with 5,863 total offensive yards and ninth with 6.12 yards per play... Only surrendered one sack on the year according to Pro Football Focus, which came at Iowa State.
2021: Played in all 13 games, primarily on field goal protection... Also saw time as a reserve offensive lineman against Kansas, West Virginia and LSU.
2020: Saw action in six games as a reserve offensive lineman and on field goal protection... Picked up Second Team Academic All-Big 12 honors.
2019: Saw action in one game, playing in a reserve role against Bowling Green.
2018: Redshirted.
HIGH SCHOOL: A four-year letterwinner at Plainville under head coach Grant Stephenson... Earned first team all-state honors as a junior and senior from the Topeka Capital-Journal, while he was a first-team honoree by the Wichita Eagle as a senior and honorable mention pick as a junior... Helped the Cardinals earn an 11-2 record and was the state runner up as a junior... Led team in tackles all four years and was the second all-time leading tackler in the history of the league with 354 total tackles, including 206 solo stops, 14 sacks and five fumble recoveries... Also blocked four field goals and picked off three passes... Lettered four years in basketball and one year in track and field.
PERSONAL: Hayden Gillum was born October 20, 1999, in Garden City, Kansas... Son of Tyler and Camden Gillum... Has one brother, Hadley, who played basketball at Fort Hays State... Obtained his undergraduate degree from K-State in professional strategic selling in December 2021 and his MBA in May 2023.
