Kansas State track and field assistant coach Nathan Ott enters his second year coaching the Wildcats throws unit, after leading the Wildcats to individual Big 12 titles, All-American honors, school records and more.

Ott's first season with the Wildcats led to him being named USTFCCCA Midwest Region Assistant Women's Coach of the Year in 2019.

At the 2019 Big 12 Outdoor Championship, Ott guided the Wildcats to two individual Big 12 Championships, including Helene Ingvaldsen (hammer throw) and Taylor Latimer (shot put). Ott guided the K-State women's throws unit to 48 of the 156.5 points at the Big 12 Outdoor Championship, while coaching Ingvaldsen to a sweep of the Big 12 weight/hammer throw titles in 2019.

After the Big 12 Championship, Ott coached four individuals to the NCAA Outdoor Championships, which resulted in a fourth-place finish in the women's shot put from sophomore Taylor Latimer and an eighth-place finish from Brett Neelly in the discus. Throughout the course of the 2019 season, several Wildcat throwers broke into the K-State top-10 lists, including Neelly, who broke the indoor and outdoor shot put records, becoming the first Wildcat to ever break 20 meters in the event, which he did both indoors and outdoors.

In 2018, Ott was a part of the NAU coaching staff that guided the team to sweep the Big Sky Indoor and Outdoor Conference Championships, winning both the men’s and women’s conference championships, earning the men their 22nd Big Sky Outdoor Championship and the women’s team their 11th Big Sky Outdoor Championship.

Ott coached standout Brooke Andersen to two consecutive runner-up finishes in the hammer throw at the NCAA Championships, throwing 72.87m/239-1 at the 2018 NCAA Outdoor Championships. In 2017, Andersen’s second-place finish was the highest finish of any Big Sky Athlete, men’s or women’s, in a field event since 2001. Andersen went on to become a three-time All-American while coached under Ott, while also placing third at the USATF Outdoor Championships in 2018 with a throw of 72.17m/236-09.

Andersen also won the 2018 Big Sky Outdoor hammer throw title, 2018 Big Sky Indoor weight throw title and owns the school records in both events. Andersen also competed at the 2016 U.S. Olympic Trials.

In addition to Andersen, Lumberjack Julia Viberg won two Big Sky Championships in the women’s discus in 2014 and 2015.

On the men’s side, Ott coached Lumberjack standout Adam Keenan, who was a two-time All-American and Big Sky Champion in the hammer throw, while also winning the 2017 Canadian Track and Field Championships. Keenan also holds the U20 Canadian Record of 74.11m/243-01.

At Texas State, Ott coached one national qualifier, four west preliminary qualifiers and eight Sunbelt Conference Champions. He also had athletes break records in the men’s indoor and outdoor shot put, weight throw and hammer throw – which was set and reset by two different athletes – and the women’s weight throw.

At Southern Utah, Ott coached 19 conference champions, 11 NCAA Regional qualifiers and one All-American. Under his tenure, the Thunderbird throwers broke 13 school records, posted 142 top 10 marks and boasted three team MVPs.

In 2013, Ott coached Kayla Kovar to an indoor Big Sky Championship in the shot put and a Most Outstanding Performer honor. In total, Kovar notched six conference championships under Ott’s coaching. She also holds school records in the indoor and outdoor shot put, weight throw, discus and is second all-time in the hammer throw.

As a student-athlete at Southern Utah, Ott set the school record in the hammer throw with a distance of 61.39m/201-05. He won the Mid-Continent Conference Championship for the hammer throw in 2007 and was the team’s leading scorer in 2006. He was also a two-time NCAA West Regional qualifier.
