2013-14: Racing: Started the spring in the 1V4...earned a gold medal at SIRAS...moved to the 2V4 for the remainder of the season...Big 12 Champion...bronze medal at C-USA Championship...Athletic: Earned 2nd varsity letter...Academic: Big 12 Commissioner's Honor Roll both semesters.
2012-13: Racing: Raced in the 1V4 at the Longhorn Invitational, beating SMU... raced in the 2V8 and 2V4 for the remainder of the season... Athletic: Earned 1st varsity letter.
2011-12: Racing: Debuted in the spring in the 1N4 at the OU Invitational... aided the Wildcats in their sweep of KU by defeating them in the 1N4.
High School: Lettered in basketball, volleyball and softball... member National Honor Society, German Club, honor roll and International Baccalaureate program... volunteered for Humane Society and member of American Red Cross.
Personal: Born August 2, 1992... daughter of Steve Bates and Sue Holt... has one brother Spencer and a twin sister Clarissa.
Athlete Q&A
How do you balance school, rowing, a job, and a social life?
Balancing a sport along with school and various activities is tough, but you learn how to prioritize. It's a difficult task adjusting to whatever is thrown at you, but for me personally, I like being involved and staying active whether it's with rowing or on campus.
What has rowing taught you about yourself?
One of the biggest things rowing has taught me, is that I can tackle a lot more than what I originally thought. I'm still learning when it comes to this sport, but what's really stuck with me is that rowing is "between your ears" - you have to push yourself even when you just want to throw in the towel and give up.
How is K-State different from other colleges you looked at?
I think K-State is different from a lot of schools in the sense that they welcomed me with open arms. On my campus tour, students were smiling at me, and as I got to know people and become friends with them, I'd easily say we're one of the friendliest campuses in the Midwest.
