Trang Huynh-McClain arrives to K-State after being named the assistant coach for tennis in August 2021.
Huynh-McClain recently spent three seasons (2018-21) as an assistant coach at Washington State.
"I'm excited to have Trang join our tennis family," said Smith. "Having someone with her background as a player and a coach is going to be instrumental in adding on to our success this upcoming season. Clearly, Trang has done a wonderful job during her time at Washington State. I have no doubt that she will bring this same energy and work ethic to K-State. I look forward to working with Trang as she excels at being a positive influence for our current and future Wildcats."
Huynh-McClain arrives at K-State after three seasons (2018-21) at her alma mater Washington State, where she helped the Cougars to 44 wins and the school's first trip (2019) to the NCAA Championships in seven years. The 19 wins in 2019 were the second-most in school history and included a victory over 10th-ranked UCLA. In addition, WSU was a regular in the national rankings during Huynh-McClain's tenure, including a climb to a program-best ITA No. 15 ranking in 2018.
During the Cougars' run to the NCAA Championships in 2019, Huynh-McClain helped coach an individual (Michaela Bayerlova) and a doubles team (Tiffany Mylonas/Hikaru Sato) to bids to the NCAA Championships, where Mylonas and Sato helped deliver the school's first victory in the doubles' championships. Bayerlova (2019, 2021) and Mylonas (2019) each earned All-Pac-12 honors under Huynh-McClain's direction, including First Team honors for Bayerlova in 2019, while Sato was the ITA Northwest Region Rookie of the Year in 2019.
Academically, the Cougars recorded their highest team GPA in program history in Spring 2020 and had the highest team GPA among all sports at WSU. The team earned the ITA All-Academic Award in 2019 and 2020 while also having five ITA Scholar-Athletes and four Pac-12 All-Academic Honor Roll student-athletes.
"I'm grateful to be a part of the tennis program and the K-State family," stated Huynh-McClain. "I want to thank Jordan, and everyone involved for the opportunity. I also want to thank Lisa Hart for being a great mentor, friend, and coach during my time at Washington State University. I am super excited to get started."
Prior to her time in Pullman, Huynh-McClain served as the women's tennis graduate assistant coach at Northern Illinois from January 2017 to May 2018. She helped NIU advance to the program's first-ever MAC Championships and coached the Huskies' first-ever MAC Freshman of the Year in 2017. She also contributed to the school's first-ever Jacoby Trophy, the MAC's top women's athletic program award.
During Huynh-McClain's time at NIU, she coached two First Team All-MAC selections, a two-time MAC Singles Player of the Week winner and a four-time MAC Doubles Team of the Week pair.
The Huskies recorded the highest APR score in the MAC in 2017 and had three student-athletes named to the Academic All-MAC Team in 2017 and 2018. Huynh-McClain mentored a MAC Distinguished Scholar Athlete and an ITA All-Academic Team honor with five recipients awarded an ITA Scholar-Athlete accolade.
Before heading to NIU, Huynh-McClain was a student assistant coach at Washington State from August to December 2016. She assisted with court coaching during competition and practice, planned and coordinated community service and fundraising activities and helped with team travel.
