Mesquita, a sophomore from Lourinha, Portugal, opened singles play by extending the 28th-ranked Wildcats lead to 2-0 with her straight-set victory over the William & Mary’s Olivia Thaler, 6-3, 6-3. The sophomore is now 17-5 in her sophomore campaign, adding a 7-2 record in spring season play. She teamed with freshman Anna Turco for a victory over Charlotte Madson and Olivia Thaler of William & Mary, 7-5, clinching the doubles point. The duo picks up its first win of the season when paired. The Cats (8-2) will travel to Dallas on Friday to face the SMU Mustangs.
OTHER TOP PERFORMERS
Kayla Goth - Women’s Basketball
Goth, a junior from Deforest, Wis., averaged 19.3 points and 7 assists during a three-game stretch last week, bookended with the Big 12 Tournament. She added 15 points, nine assists and six rebounds at home Monday versus Texas Tech and 19 points, eight assists, three rebounds and four steals Friday versus Kansas in the opening round of the Big 12 Tournament. They are her 15th and 16th games this season with 15 or more points and five or more assists. In a loss to Baylor on Saturday in the quarterfinals, she finished with 24 points and four assists. She was named to the All-Big 12 Second Team last Wednesday.
Justin Heskett - Baseball
Heskett, a senior from Chowchilla, Calif., turned in 7 2/3 innings without allowing an earned run Sunday versus La Salle, leading the Wildcats to a three-game sweep this weekend at Tointon Family Stadium. Heskett (1-1) recorded his first win of the season after scattering nine hits – just one for extra bases – while striking out four and yielding two walks, the right-hander's career-long outing. The Cats put across single runs in the first, third and fourth innings in support of Heskett’s start. This marks the fourth time in his fourth-career start in which he did not allow an earned run. The Cats (7-4) host a two-game series with Incarnate Word Tuesday.
Dean Wade - Men’s Basketball
Wade, a junior from St. John, Kan., helped the Wildcats finish fourth in the Big 12 with a victory at home Saturday versus Baylor. He paced three Wildcats in double figures with a team-high 25 points on 9-of-14 shooting to go with a game-tying 7 rebounds, becoming the 30th player in K-State history to surpass the 500-point mark in a single season. He went on to lead all scorers with 24 points on 10-of-14 field goals in a loss at TCU last Tuesday. On Sunday he became just the fourth Wildcat to be named to the All-Big 12 First Team, joining Michael Beasley (2008), Jacob Pullen (2010, 2011) and Rodney McGruder (2013).
