The Wildcats were 3-1 to end the regular season
MANHATTAN, Kan.- The K-State women's tennis team could not keep up with Kansas on Sunday (April 12) in the Sunflower Showdown as the Wildcats fell short 4-0 at Mike Goss Tennis Stadium to wrap up the regular season.
K-State (8-13, 3-10 Big 12) could not find their footing in doubles matches against #39 Kansas (13-9, 9-4 Big 12) while a change in the singles lineup was a hurdle the Wildcats could not overcome. The Cats went 3-1 to end the regular season.
Both K-State doubles teams lost in a 6-2 decision, the #89 ranked pair, junior Maralgoo Chogsomjav and freshman Martaa Chogsomjav, battled against Yerkezhan Arystanbekova and Anna Putilina in the no. 1 court. In the no. 2 spot freshman Sasha Kyselova and sophomore Chanel Rustemova fell short to Heike Janse van Vuuren and Meg McCarty.
Freshmen Varvara Bernovich and Diana Smolinska were down 3-5 in the no. 3 position to Meriem Ben Ezzedine and Kyoka Kubo went unfinished.
Back in the no. 2 court, Kyselova faced van Vuuren in a battle. After a tough first set down 3-6, she lost steam early in the second set only able to put up one point at 3-6, 1-6.
Rustemova moved back into the no. 4 spot for the second time this week, competing against Ben Ezzedine. In the first set she strung together two points after starting with a 0-5 deficit but the next set had a similar outcome as she couldn't slow her opponent down, losing 2-6, 2-6.
Freshman Addison Renfro put up points in her first conference match as she played Putilina in the no. 6 position. After a scoreless first set she gained some momentum to start the second as she put together two quick points before eventually leading to a 0-6, 2-6 final.
Maralgoo missed singles competition due to injury, advancing her sister Martaa to the no. 1 court again versus Kubo. Martaa was the only Wildcat to battle into three sets as she started down 2-6 but bounced back in the second set, leading by as much as three points and secured a 6-3 win, the match going unfinished at the start of the third set at 2-6, 6-3.
Bernovich was the only Wildcat to clinch the first set as she went back and forth with McCarty in the no. 5 spot. After securing a 6-4 start she maintained her composure as she was leading 4-2 in the second set when the match ended at 6-4, 4-2.
Smolinska faced Arystanbekova, starting with a tough tiebreaker in the no. 3 position. The match featured ups and downs as Smolinska was down, gained the lead, and then went point for point leading to a tiebreaker where she once again lost her lead and eventually fell 6-7 (5-7). The two had collected a couple points apiece when the match was abandoned at 6-7 (5-7), 2-3.
K-State finishes the regular season with an 8-13 record, 3-10 in conference play for 12th place in the conference. The Big 12 Championship (April 15-18) features the top-10 teams this season.
FROM THE COURTS
Head Coach Jordan Smith
On finishing out the regular season with a loss after three straight wins…
"Honestly, it's one of those bittersweet things where we had a really good week and obviously it's always frustrating when you can't finish it out. But I am happy where we've been building. Obviously it's tough when one of your better players goes out for singles and it changes it up. We knew it was gonna be a tougher task, but I was kind of proud with our match ups and what we were gonna do with the sudden change going into singles."
On needing confidence from a young team…
"But in a day, I think there's got to be a little bit more of buying into our own brand, a little bit more when we're playing our matches. I think that's one thing this young group is still kind of finding out about themselves. It's like they need to remember that they've invested in themselves. So when you're investing, you got to go out there and show your product. And I think sometimes we're always doubting that we have a good product. And they're really special so I think if they can remember that a little bit better, then it's easier for us to kind of go out there and be more consistent."
