- 2003
A Kansas State graduate with a degree in physical education, Judy Akers helped start the women’s basketball at Kansas State University. She still stands as the winningest coach in the program’s history.
She directed the Wildcats to victories in the first 11 games K-State ever played, and that set the tone for the next 11 seasons. Akers never had a team that finished below .500 in that time, ending her career with a 206-94 (.687) record.
Her teams won two Big Eight Conference championships, in 1975-76 and 1976-77. Akers Wildcats had six 20-win seasons and appeared in the AIAW National Tournament five times, earning a pair of sixth-place finishes. Kansas State captured the AIAW Region VI title twice, in 1973 and 1977.Â
Akers also served as K-State’s women’s athletic director from 1974-1976.
