Dallas, Texas - Senior outside hitter Lisa Mimick was named the Big 12 Conference Volleyball Player of the Week by the league office on Monday afternoon after she totaled back-to-back double-doubles (kills-digs) in helping Kansas State to a pair of four-game victories over Texas and 21st-ranked Colorado this past week.
This marks the second straight week that a Wildcat student-athlete has received the honor following sophomore Cari Jensen's selection on Nov. 5 in helping Kansas State to season sweeps of archrival Kansas and Iowa State.
"Lisa continues to play her best volleyball when it matters most," said head coach Suzie Fritz. "For her to come out and perform like she did last week was a great lift for this team. She really played well in a tough environment at Texas then she came out and was her consistent self in a big win over Colorado. I'm happy that she finally received this honor because she has played well all season for us."
A 5-foot-11 outside hitter from Spencer, Neb., Mimick averaged 4.38 kills per game on an impressive .346 hitting in helping the Wildcats take the season series from Texas then upset 21st-ranked Colorado to go along with 3.38 digs per game and 1.00 blocks per game. In the third straight victory over the Longhorns in Austin, Texas on Wednesday, she tallied a team-best 20 kills on a career-high .425 hitting with 14 digs and four blocks for her 10th double-double of the season. It marked just the second time this season and third time in her career that Mimick has surpassed the 20-kill plateau in a match. In the decisive four-game victory over 21st-ranked Colorado on Saturday, she continued her stellar play, posting 15 kills and 13 digs to go along with a team-best three service aces and four blocks.
The emotional leader of the team with starts in 22 of the Wildcats' 23 matches this season, Mimick ranks first on the team and seventh in the Big 12 in digs per game with her 3.42 average. She also ranks sixth in conference-only digs with a 3.68 average. She ranks second on the team in kills (2.92) and double-doubles (11), while she is third in blocks per game (0.87).
Mimick is the second Wildcat to be honored as conference Athlete of the Week this season following Jensen's selection on Nov. 5. It also marks the first time in school history that two players have earned the distinction in back-to-back weeks. Overall, she becomes the 11th Kansas State player to garner the prize in the conference's five-year existence.
On the strength of the wins over Texas and No. 21 Colorado, Kansas State continued to move up the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Top 25 on Monday, moving three spots to No. 22 after rejoining the poll last week at No. 25. It is the highest ranking of the season for the Wildcats after also being ranked No. 22 for three straight polls from Sept. 3-17. By virtue of its win over the Buffaloes, K-State moved into third place in the Big 12 standings with a 16-7 overall record and a 12-5 mark in league action. The team has just three league matches left in the regular season.
Kansas State returns to the road on Wednesday, Nov. 14, as the Wildcats travel to Waco, Texas to face the Baylor Bears (17-8, 8-8 Big 12) at the Ferrell Center beginning at 7 p.m. K-State will be looking to sweep the season series from Baylor for the first time since 1998 after posting a tough 3-2 victory in Manhattan on Oct. 13.
