Manhattan, Kan. - A pair of freshman women earned the weekly awards from the Kansas State Track and Field Program for performances April 13 at the Gatorade Classic meet hosted by the University of Miami.
Trisha Culbertson was the Women's Track Athlete of the Week after cutting six seconds off her personal record in the 3,000-meter run. Culbertson was third in 10:07.83 in the 3K, running her first outdoor meet as a collegian.
"It was good to see Trisha out competing after being sidelined for the beginning of the outdoor season due to a lower leg injury," said K-State assistant coach Randy Cole. "She showed that she is in decent aerobic shape and has the ability to score at the Big 12 Championships if she keeps progressing."
Brie Madden was the Wildcats' Women's Field Athlete of the Week after hitting an NCAA provisional mark with her second-place finish in the high jump. She cleared 5-10.50 to finish second only to teammate Austra Skujyte.
"After three short weeks of practice, Brie had an amazing performance in Miami," said Wildcat head coach Cliff Rovelto. "With a couple more weeks of training under her belt, she will become more consistent."
Sophomore Joseph Lee was named the Male Track Athlete of the Week after winning the 800-meter run in Miami. Lee had a season-best mark of 1:49.52, coming within striking distance of the NCAA provisional mark of 1:49.
"In running his fastest race of the year, Joseph demonstrated the type of aggressiveness he will need in the next few weeks if he is to challenge for an NCAA qualifying standard," said assistant coach Mike Smith. "He is training at a very high level and needs only to get into a more competitive race to have the kind of breakthrough that we expect of him."
Sophomore Tarl Vetter was the Male Field Athlete of the Week after hitting a personal-record of 177-6 in the hammer. He won the competition in Miami with a mark that moved him into fourth place on K-State's all-time list.
"Tarl had a great weekend, setting a new PR by nearly 15 feet," said assistant coach Steve Fritz. "This really puts him in position to place well at conference."
