Drake Relays Serve as Final Tune-Up for Big 12 Championships
Apr 21, 2004 | Track & Field
The pair of men's 5,000 meter competitors that will run this weekend in Des Moines, Iowa are Mathew Chesang and Rogers Kipchumba. Chesang is only 11 seconds away from a regional qualifying mark, although he has won the event in back-to-back meets (Miami Gatorade Invitational on April 10th, and the Kansas Relays last weekend). Kipchumba competes in the event for the fourth time this season, coming off a season best 15:17.10 last weekend at the Kansas Relays. Both are looking for their first qualifying times of the season.
On the women's side of the 5,000 meters, Trisha Culbertson will look for her first regional qualifying time of the season during her second attempt in the event. In her only time running the event this season, Culbertson won the Miami Gatorade Invitational, crossing the line at 17:23.06. Steffi Murer will compete for the first time this season at 5,000 meters. Murer has only competed in the 1,500 meter run this year, with a top time of 4:41.02 at the Baldy Castillo Invite.
The men's 4x800 meter relay competes for the first time this year, hoping to have as much success as the two other relays, the 400 and 1,600-meter relays. Both have regional qualifying times. The 400-meter relays punched their ticket to the Midwest Regional with a time of 40.02. The 1,600-meter relay's top time this season is 3:09.75.
The 2004 Drake Relays get underway for K-State Thursday with the women's 5,000 meter run at 4:25, followed by the men. The men's 4x800-meter relay team competes at 1:40 on Friday. Results are expected be on the Drake Relays website at www.drakerelays.com. Results will be posted www.kstatesports.com when they are available.
