K-State to Face Texas Tech in First Big 12 Test

MANHATTAN - The Wildcats will look to extend its season-high win streak to three this weekend against the Lady Raiders of Texas Tech. The match will be played outdoors at Washburn Tennis Facility, east of the Student Recreation Center; in case of inclimate weather, the match will be moved to Ahearn Field House at 11 a.m. If successful, it will be the first three-match winning streak since the 2003 season when K-State won six straight between March 19 to April 15.
Kansas State is 8-5 against Texas Tech, with a 2-1 mark in Manhattan. In last season’s meeting in Lubbock, the Wildcats fell 4-3.
K-State ended a three-match losing streak by defeating Utah 6-1, Feb. 25, and followed with a 7-0 win over SMS, Feb. 26. Senior Maria Rosenberg won two matches over the weekend and is now just four wins shy of the school record for career singles wins.
Texas Tech: At a Glance
The Lady Raiders are currently 2-5 under second year head coach Cari Groce. Groce and her charges accumulated an 11-10 overall record and a 4-7 mark in the Big 12 last season. In her 15-year coaching career, Groce has amassed a record of 163-141 with stops at Tulsa (1991), Washington State (1992-2003) and Texas Tech.
Texas Tech is currently on a two-match winning streak of its own, defeating Cal State-Northridge 6-1 and Northern Arizona 4-0. Tech is led by Cigdem Duru at the number one position with a 3-2 mark. Leading the Lady Raiders in wins is junior Katja Kovacic with an 8-2 overall mark and a 3-1 record in the number five position. The top doubles team this spring has been Kovacic and sophomore Lakann Wagley in the number two position with a 2-2 mark.
.500 is a Good Thing, Now and Again
With the two wins over the weekend, K-State reached .500 in a number of categories:
Overall team record, 3-3; first time since Feb. 29, 2004 the Wildcats have been at .500, ironically with the same record of 3-3.
In the month of February, K-State was 2-2 in the month. It was the second .500 month this season.
On Friday’s. The Wildcats evened its record on the day to 1-1 beating Utah, 6-1. K-State’s most productive day of the week thus far has been Saturday at 2-1.
Against the Mountain West Conference. K-State evened its mark on the year against the MWC by beating Utah. Its only loss was to 25th-ranked BYU, a 4-3 heartbreaker. The Wildcats best record against a conference is 2-0 against the Missouri Valley, with one match remaining against an MVC school, Wichita State, April 2.
Rosenberg Earns 72nd and 73rd Career Singles Wins
Maria Rosenberg took two steps towards the school’s career singles win record with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Liz Ferris of Utah on Friday and a 6-0, 6-2 defeat of Elizabeth Garza of SMS. The Manhattan, Kan., product is now just four wins short of the record, currently held by Petra Sedlmajerova from 1999-2003 with 77 career singles wins.

60/40 Double Vision for Rosenberg
Senior Maria Rosenberg won her 60th career doubles match against SMS in an 8-0 sweep. The win was also her 40th career dual doubles win. Overall, Rosenberg has a career doubles record of 60-48 (.556 winning percentage) and a 40-25 (.615) mark in dual doubles matches.
Diaz Doubles the Fun
Senior Judith Diaz has doubled her fun in her final year of eligibility. The product of Margarita Island, Venezuela has a 10-3 record in doubles play and is unbeaten in this spring’s dual matches at 6-0 (4-0 with Jessica Simosa and 2-0 with Tereza Prochazkova).
Diaz has equaled her win total of a season ago when she was 10-23 in doubles play. Overall, she has a 20-26 career doubles record and is 15-15 in dual matches. She has been the most successful in the number two doubles position, tabulating a 12-11 record.
