MANHATTAN - Kansas State will send a distance delegation to the 96th running of the Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa this weekend. The Wildcats will also send a small number of athletes to the UMKC Invitational. A live broadcast of the Drake Relays can be found at www.drakebroadcasting.com.
Athletes scheduled to perform at the Drake Relays include: Mathew Chesang (1,500- and 5,000-meters), Cate Holston and Tina Todd (10,000-meters), Joe Moore (3,000-meter steeplechase) and Lysaira Roman-Del Valle (800- and 1,500-meters).
K-State had a short travel weekend as they took part in the 78th annual Kansas Relays. The Wildcats left the three-day event with seven event titles and two more NCAA Midwest Regional qualifiers, Annika Haedt (pole vault) and Marianne Schlachter (triple jump).
Triple Jumper Snares Kansas Relays Crown
Junior Stelios Kapsalis captured the Kansas Relays men’s triple jump title on his final attempt on Saturday. The Limassol, Cyprus, native skipped to a season-best distance of 52-04.75. Kapsalis, a 2004 Big 12 Conference champion in the event, has a career-best of 52-06.00 at the 2004 NCAA Midwest Regionals. The distance ranks fifth on the K-State all-time performance list.
Schlachter Reaches Qualifying Standard
Freshman Marianne Schlachter attained NCAA Midwest Regional status during the Kansas Relays. The Albbruck, Germany, product skipped to 40-06.00 in just her second outdoor event at K-State. Schlachter finished fourth at the 2005 Big 12 Indoor Championships after tranferring to Kansas State during the second semester.
Haedt Vaults into Regionals
Junior Annika Haedt reached the regional qualifying mark in the pole vault during the Kansas Relays. The Wathena, Kan., native soared to a second-place finish with a mark of 12-05.50. Haedt joined teammate and pole vaulter Breanna Eveland as regional qualifiers in the vault.
High Jumper Moves to 36th in World Rankings; Hill Joins Top 50
Junior Kyle Lancaster jumped three more places in the April 18 International Association of Athletics Federation (IAAF) world high jump rankings to 36th. The Fort Scott, Kan., native entered the outdoor season ranked 52nd in the world and moved to 39th in the April 4 rankings. With his performance of 7-04.50 at the Sun Angel Classic, Lancaster nudged past former Wildcat Nathan Leeper, who fell from 25th to 37th. The only other Big 12 athlete on the list is Texas sophomore and 2005 Big 12 Indoor Champion Andra Manson at 34th.
On the women’s side, senior Chaytan Hill improved one position to crack the world’s top-50 in the triple jump. The Kirby, Texas native had a school-record and NCAA Midwest regional qualifying distance of 45-05.00 in the event.
Tickets Now On Sale for 2005 Big 12 Outdoor Championships
The Kansas State ticket office has started selling tickets for the 2005 Big 12 Outdoor Track & Field Championships, May 13-15 at R.V. Christian Track Complex. Prices for the three-day event are as follows: $10 for adults for all three sessions, $6 for a single session adult pass, $5 for student/senior single session passes and $2 for youth single session tickets.
