Wildcats Win Sun & Fun Classic

MIAMI, Fla. - Tournament MVP Kimberly Dietz scored a game-high 21 points and Kansas State held off Florida International for a 59-52 victory in the championship game of the Fun & Sun Classic Saturday night at Pharmed Arena.
Claire Coggins scored 11 points and was named to the all-tournament team and Ashley Sweat totaled 10 points and seven rebounds for Kansas State (12-1), which closed out the non-conference portion of the season with its ninth straight.
Lasma Jekabsone scored 12 points and grabbed 11 rebounds and LaQuetta Ferguson added 10 points as Florida International (8-4) sufferred its first loss six games.
The Wildcats led 30-26 at halftime and looked to be pulling away after Dietz scored eight points during a 13-3 run that put K-State up 53-40 with 7:27 to play.
But the Golden Panthers rallied behind a 12-3 spurt of their own and closed the game to 56-52 with just 24 seconds to go on a 3-point play by Ferguson.
Dietz hit a free throw then corralled her own miss on the Wildcats' ensuing possession and Sweat put in a layup as time expired to seal the victory for Kansas State
The Wildcats open Big 12 Conference action at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 3, at No. 8 Oklahoma before returning to Bramlage Coliseum to take on Texas A&M on Saturday, Jan. 6, at 2 p.m.
