Wildcats' Upset Bid Falls Short

MANHATTAN, Kan. - Ashley Sweat scored 19 points to lead Kansas State but the Wildcats' upset bid was spoiled Sunday as 11th-ranked Oklahoma stormed back to take a 64-58 Big 12 Conference win at Bramlage Coliseum.

With the loss, Kansas State dropped to 12-14 on the season and 4-8 in conference play, while Oklahoma improved to 19-7 and 9-3.

Up 43-22 with 16:03 remaining following a Brittany Chambers 3-pointer, Kansas State looked to be on track to steal a conference win against the Sooners. But, Oklahoma answered with 15 straight points to get within six and back into the game.

Sweat's layup at the 10:42 mark ended the scoring drought but the Sooners answered with a 3-pointer to close the gap to five at 45-40.

Both teams would trade baskets and Nyeshia Stevenson's jumper at the 5:50 mark brought the Sooners to within 49-48. But, Chambers answered with a basket to briefly extend the K-State lead to three until Stevenson hit a three to tie the game at 51. Oklahoma then took its first lead since the 17:30 mark of the first half at 53-51 with 4:37 left in the game on a Carlee Roethlisberger lay-up.

Chambers' trey with 3:31 left gave the lead back to K-State at 54-53, but the Sooners would score seven straight down the stretch to complete the comeback.

Sweat led the way for K-State in the scoring column while moving into thid all-time in scoring at K-State. Brittany Chambers poured in 13 points and Jalana Childs added 11 in the losing effort.

K-State shot just 35 percent from the floor in the contest, while Oklahoma finished at 42.6 percent for the game and 48.4 percent in the second half. After not attempting a free throw in the first 20 minutes, Oklahoma hit all 13 of its attempts in the second half to help clinch the win.

Oklahoma held an early lead in the first half until a Sweat jumper ignited a 9-0 K-State run as the Wildcats grabbed an 11-5 lead.

Shalin Spani's three at the 8:43 mark upped the Wildcats' lead to 15-9 and jump-started a 10-0 K-State run. The lead grew to as many as 16 in the first half for the Wildcats as Sweat went for 13 points in the opening frame.

K-State held a 34-18 lead at intermission after hitting on 4-of-9 beyond the arc and forcing 14 first-half Sooner turnovers.

Approximately 70 former Wildcat women's basketball players were in attendance Sunday as part of the K-State women's basketball reunion weekend in Manhattan.

K-State returns to action Wednesday when it hosts Texas Tech. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. and the game will be televised by Fox Sports Kansas City.
