
Otuonye, Kynard Impress at IAAF World Indoor Championships

MANHATTAN, Kan. – Senior Ifeanyichukwu Otuonye and former Wildcat star Erik Kynard wrapped up competition at the 2016 IAAF Indoor World Championships this past weekend at the Oregon Convention Center in Portland, Oregon.
Otuonye represented his home nation of Turks and Caicos in an 11th-place finish in long jump, while Kynard finished in third place to win the bronze medal in high jump while representing the United States.
The current Wildcat senior got off to a slow start, fouling on his first jump of the competition on Sunday. However, he would improve over his next two jumps, leaping 7.38m/24-02.50 on his second attempt before recording his final mark of 7.40m/24-03.50 on his third attempt.
The United States’ Marquis Dendy won the men’s long jump gold medal with a mark of 8.26m/27-01.25, which he recorded on his second attempt of the day.
During the Saturday afternoon session, Kynard started strong, clearing the first three bars. The 2012 Olympic Silver Medalist missed on his first attempt at 2.33m/7-07.75, but cleared on his second before missing all three attempts at 2.36m/7-08.75 to win the bronze medal.
Italy’s Gianmarco Tamberi won the gold medal in the event with a mark of 2.36m7-08.75, the first Italian to stand atop of the podium in 15 years.
