Kan. - The Kansas State volleyball team rebounded from its Friday
night loss to Michigan with a pair of victories Saturday at the K-State Invitational
held inside Bramlage Coliseum. K-State swept Tennessee State (25-17, 25-6,
25-22) before capping off the evening with an epic five-set battle with Georgia
Tech (25-22, 27-25, 22-25, 16-25, 15-12).
K-State finished second in the four-team
tournament and complete the weekend with a 4-2 record on the season. Redshirt senior
setter Katie Brand and junior right-side Bryna Vogel were both voted to the
all-tournament team for their performances in the K-State Invitational.
Match 1:
K-State 3, Tennessee State 0
K-State played a near flawless second set, not committing a single attacking
error while holding Tennessee State to just six points. The six points allowed equal
the fewest allowed in program history in the rally-scoring era (2007 vs. North
Texas). K-State hit .619 in the set and finished the match with a season-best
.419 attack percentage.
Eight Wildcats finished the match with multiple kills - each one
hitting better than .250. K-State never trailed in the first two sets.
Sophomore outside hitter Alyssa Schultejans registered 13 kills and
on a career-high .407 hitting percentage (13k-2e-27ta).
Brand dished out a match-best 35 assists to go along with 13 digs for the lone double-double in the match. Starting libero Devan Fairfield dug 12 balls for her fourth career match reaching double-digits and the first of 2016.
Match 2:
K-State 3, Georgia Tech 2
Kansas State held on to defeat Georgia Tech in five sets Saturday night. The
Wildcats captured the first two sets before the Yellow Jackets stormed back to
force a fifth and deciding set.
K-State closed out set two (27-25) by scoring
four of the final five points, a set in which it trailed by as many as seven
points. Setter Katie Brand recorded three kills in the final five points,
including the final two to give the Cats a two-set advantage.
K-State seized momentum behind sophomore middle
blocker Macy Flowers, who recorded three of her seven blocks in the final frame.
The Wildcats jumped out to a quick 5-1 lead and never trailed in the final set,
winning the set 15-12.
“It was fun,” said senior outside hitter Brooke
Sassin. “We got a little complacent after the first two sets but it always
feels good to win in five.
“They didn’t give us the match,” Sassin added. “We
definitely earned it.”
Sassin finished the night with 13 kills and 19
digs and was one of three Wildcats to record a double-double on the night. The San Antonio product’s 19 digs equal her career high.
Brand (50 assists, 18 digs) and junior
right-side hitter Bryna Vogel (10 kills, 20 digs) also picked up
double-doubles. It was Vogel’s first double-double of the season while Brand
has achieved the feat in back-to-back matches.
Redshirt sophomore Kylee Zumach led K-State
with 20 kills while senior libero led with 26 digs, her 16th straight
match in double figures. In total, five Wildcats reached double-digit digs.
K-State finished with a season-best 16 total
team blocks.
Kansas State returns home to Ahearn Field House
to host the Wildcat Classic, Sept. 9-10. K-State will meet up with Mississippi
State Friday at 12:00 p.m. CT before squaring off with Miami (FL) at 7:30 p.m.
The Cats finish the four-team tournament with Loyola Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
