DELOSS DODDS INVITATIONAL
MANHATTAN, Kan. – Freshman Nina Schultz used a dominant score in the pentathlon to move into ninth place on the school's all-time list in the event as she won the 2017 DeLoss Dodds Invitational pentathlon with a final score of 4,042 points in Ahearn Field House on Friday.
K-State dominated the entire pentathlon as Lauren Taubert finished in second place (3,660), Morgan Coffman finished in third place (3,594) and Ariel Okorie took fourth place (3,523). The Wildcats also saw junior Max Estill open the men's heptathlon in style, holding second place (2,851) after day one, while sophomore Simone Fassina sits in fourth place (2,630).
"I really enjoy this group of kids because they are willing to work and are open to learning," Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Cliff Rovelto said about the four freshman pentathlon athletes. "They compete and try to do what they are capable of doing. I think overall it was a very solid performance."
The women got off to a hot start in the 60 meter hurdles as Schultz won the opening event with a time of 8.60, tying her for sixth place on the school's all-time pentathlon list in the event. Okorie took second place with a time of 8.66 to remain in ninth place on the school's all-time list, while Taubert and Coffman finished in third place and seventh place with personal-best times of 8.90 and 9.60, respectively.
Schultz moved into the all-time list in the second-straight event, using a personal best 1.78m/5-10 in the high jump to claim first place in the event and move into a tie for seventh place in school pentathlon history. Coffman finished in second place with a jump of 1.75m/5-08.75, while Okorie and Taubert each finished with personal-best jumps of 1.63m/5-03 to tie for third place.
The standings were shaken up in the third event as Taubert recorded a personal-best throw of 11.00m/36-01.25 to move into second place in the heptathlon. Schultz took first place in the shot put after a throw of 11.11m/36-05.50 to remain in first place in the overall competition.
In the long jump, Schultz used her third personal best of the day, a leap of 5.65m/18-06.50, to solidify first place in the event. Okorie and Taubert finished second and third, respectively, while Coffman, who finished the event tied for fifth place, also recorded a personal best with a jump of 5.00m/16-05.
In the final event of the pentathlon, Coffman stole the show after crossing the finish line in the 800 meter run in a personal-best 2:21.50. Taubert and Schultz also recorded indoor personal-best times in the 800 meter run, finishing the race with times of 2:25.33 and 2:25.70, respectively.
Schultz's final score of 4,042 points move her into ninth place on the school's all-time list, leap-frogging Wanita Dykstra and Carmen Wright. She is also 51 points away from eighth place, which is held by former Wildcat Jill Montgomery.
K-State's men also got off to a fast start in the heptathlon as Estill used a personal-best run of 7.14 to finish in second place in the 60 meter dash, while Fassina recorded a fourth-place finish in the race with a time of 7.45. Estill followed suit in the long jump, recording another personal best with a leap of 6.83m/22-05 to win the event and take the lead in the heptathlon for the first time.
Fassina used a throw of 12.27m/40-03.25 in the shot put to finish in second place in the event and move into third place overall in the competition, while Estill topped his previous personal best in the shot put by 10 centimeters with a throw of 10.31m/33-10 to claim fifth place.
In the final event of the first day of the heptathlon, Estill missed his personal best in the high jump by two centimeters with a jump of 1.93m/6-04 to finish the day in second place in the heptathlon with a score of 2,851 points, while Fassina took fifth place in the high jump with a leap of 1.72m/5-07.75 to finish day one in fourth place with 2,630 points.
"I thought Max had a really good day," Rovelto said about his junior heptathlon athlete. "Everything he did today was a PR or right at a PR. He had a great day. Simone is coming off of surgery, so he is still not where he should be at this point."
Day two of the DeLoss Dodds Invitational resumes on Saturday with the completion of the men's heptathlon, which is set to begin at 9 a.m., CT. Field events will also begin at 9 a.m., CT, while track events are set for a 3:30 p.m., CT, start. More information on the meet can be found at the home meet information page here.
