Wesemann’s Career-High Sends (25/rv) K-State to Win

MANHATTAN, Kansas – Behind senior Kindred Wesemann's career afternoon, (25/rv) K-State overcame a nine-point third quarter deficit to end a two-game skid with a 74-69 victory over Oklahoma State on Saturday afternoon in Bramlage Coliseum.
Kansas State (16-6, 6-4 Big 12) was led by Wesemann's career-high 34 points on 10-of-18 shooting, including 4-of-10 from behind the arc and 10-of-10 at the free throw line. Freshman Eternati Willock added 10 points and nine boards in her first start in league play.
Wesemann is K-State's first 30-point scorer since Breanna Lewis scored 30 points on December 21, 2015 against Western Illinois. Her 34 points are the most by a Wildcat since Brittany Chambers set the school record for points in a game with 42 against Texas Southern on March 21, 2013. Wesemann was two points away from tying Chambers's school record for points in a conference game, which is 36 points at West Virginia on Feb. 26, 2013. Wesemann set the school record for most points scored in a third quarter with 15.
Oklahoma State (13-7, 3-6 Big 12) was led by Big 12 leading scorer and rebounder, Kaylee Jensen, with 26 points, 15 rebounds and six assists. Mandy Coleman added 18 points.
K-State shot 41.4 percent (24-of-58) from the field, while Oklahoma State shot 42.4 percent (25-of-59). The Wildcats forced 11 turnovers and held a 15-2 advantage in points off turnovers. K-State shot 80.8 percent (21-of-26) from the free throw line. The Wildcats tallied a season-low six turnovers.
The Wildcats and Cowgirls traded baskets for the first four minutes before back-to-back 3-pointers by Wesemann put K-State up 13-7 and forced an Oklahoma State timeout with 5:48 to play in the first quarter.
K-State went scoreless for the next four minutes, as a Karli Wheeler 3-pointer sparked an 8-2 Cowgirl run to end the first quarter and tie the game at 15.
Oklahoma State continued its run into the second quarter, but a Karyla Middlebrook transition layup followed by a pair of free throws brought the Wildcats to within two points, 21-19, with 4:32 to go in the opening half. Middlebrook finished with nine points, seven assists and five rebounds.
The Wildcats kept it close as the second quarter wound down, but an offensive rebound and put back by Jensen with just seconds on the clock pushed the Cowgirls lead to 33-27 at halftime.
After the Cowgirls pushed the lead to nine early in the third quarter, K-State used a 14-0 run led by eight points from Wesemann to put the Wildcats ahead 43-38 with 5:49 to play in the third quarter.
A Wesemann steal and traditional 3-point basket gave the Wildcats a 48-40 lead before a Coleman 3-pointer cut the Wildcat lead to five, 48-43, with 4:15 remaining in the quarter.
The Cowgirls used a 7-0 run in which they cut the Wildcat lead to two before a pair of Kaylee Page free throws put K-State up 54-50 after three quarters. Page added eight points, including a 5-of-6 effort at the foul line, and four rebounds off the bench.
K-State and Oklahoma State went back-and-forth to start the fourth quarter, with each team scoring eight points over the first five minutes. The Wildcats held a 62-58 lead with 4:58 to play in the game.
The Cowgirls fought back to within four points several times, but could not cut it to a one-possession game as the Wildcats made clutch free throws in the final minutes to pick up the victory, 74-69.
Kansas State will play four of its next five games on the road, as the Wildcats travel to Lubbock, Texas, to face Texas Tech on Wednesday night at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday's game will be broadcast on FS Plus and the K-State Sports Network.
