25th-Ranked Baylor Handles K-State in Four Sets Saturday
Oct 14, 2017 | Volleyball
MANHATTAN, Kan. – Following K-State's Set 3 win, No. 25 Baylor tallied eight consecutive points midway through the fourth set to seal a 25-22, 25-21, 22-25, 25-11 victory over the Wildcats on Saturday night at Ahearn Field House.
K-State (9-11, 2-5 Big 12) clawed back with a 25-22 third-set win after dropping the match's opening two sets, only to see Baylor (16-4, 6-1 Big 12) use an 8-0 run to open an 11-point edge and cruise to a 25-11 win in the final set.
Redshirt junior Kylee Zumach paced the Wildcat offense with 13 kills (.303) while senior Bryna Vogel turned in a team-high 22 digs. Middle blocker Peyton Williams' was the team's efficiency leader, as the redshirt freshman hit .476 (11 kills, 1 error, 21 total attacks).
"I thought we played really well at times," said head coach Suzie Fritz. "The connection between our middles and our setters was as good as its been. At times, I thought our serving kept us in it. Zumach hits over .300 again; really good night for her. That was good progress for us.
"Consistency is part of being good in anything that you do," Fritz added. "We are still developing consistency. We are working incredibly hard to be more consistent – to be good over time. That effort, for the most part with the exception of the beginning of Game 4, was the most consistent effort we've had from start to finish, probably, in the last couple of matches. We can't be 100% concerned with results all the time. We have to continue to be focused on the progress, and there was a lot of progress in that one."
The Cats hit over .340 in both the second and third sets, but were forced into seven errors against eight kills (.033) by the Bears in Set 4. Baylor hit a match-high .464 (14k-1e-28ta) in the fourth on its way to the only wire-to-wire set win of the night.
Baylor recorded 14 more kills (64-50) and 15 more assists (62-47) than K-State on the night. Four Bears reached double-figure kills, led by Yossiana Pressley with a season-high 20.
"They're really, really good," Fritz said of Baylor. "They've got three great pin hitters. [Shelly] Fanning is really good in the middle, as well. They are very balanced offensively and they play really, really fast."
"Obviously, it's not the outcome we wanted," said Zumach. "They have such an offensively productive team, they were firing on all cylinders at every position. It was hard to get on a roll."
The Cats trailed by as many as six in the opening set, but chipped away at the BU lead and tied the score at 22 before the Bears scored the set's final three points. Zumach tallied four kills on 13 swings without an error (.308) in the game. Defensively, Williams had four blocks while Vogel added 11 digs as Set 1 saw eight tied scores and five lead changes.
Game 2 held eight more tied scores and the Cats were within a pair late, 23-21. Back-to-back Bear kills gave Baylor a commanding two-sets-to-none lead. Vogel picked up four of her seven kills in the set on nine swings and no errors (.404).
K-State returned the favor in the third, ending the frame on a 3-0, capped by setter Sarah Dixon's third ace, after the score was tied at 22. This time, it was Williams' who led the offense, as she picked up five kills on eight swings (.625) while Zumach and Macy Flowers each contributed four. Set 3 was the only set in which the Cats out-hit BU (.342-.250). Dixon's three aces are a career high.
"I think our setters did a fantastic job setting and getting our middles involved more," Zumach added. "That made it easier for the outsides to get a few off, too. The setters did awesome."
Junior setter Brooke Smith led K-State in assists with 25 for the fifth straight match. Dixon recorded 18 assists. Libero Reilly Killeen had 16 digs as her and Vogel were the only Wildcats to reach double-figures.
K-State is back in action on Saturday, October 21 as it takes on West Virginia (13-6, 2-4 Big 12) at noon CT at WVU Coliseum. Fans can listen to Rob Voelker call the action live KMAN 1350 AM, 93.3 FM and on K-StateSports.com.
