
Three Wildcats Advance to Round of 16 at ITA Regionals

Decker, Mesquita, Turco move on at ITA Regionals
LAWRENCE, Kan. – Margot Decker, Ines Mesquita and Anna Turco all advanced to the Round of 16 on the second day of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Regional Championships presented by Oracle, at the University of Kansas Jayhawk Tennis Center and Sports Pavilion.
Decker and Mesquita each moved through the bracket to the Round of 16 in singles after a pair of victories, while the doubles team of Decker and Turco advanced after an 8-2 victory over the UMKC pair of Aliona Ladutska and Grace Ball earlier in the day.
Mesquita moved to 9-0 this season in singles play with two victories Friday, placing her in the Round of 16. Mesquita defeated AnneMarie Emme of Minnesota in straight sets, 7-6 (4), 7-5. Mesquita sealed her berth to theRround of 16 with a three-set victory over Tulsa's Martha Matoula, 3-6, 7-5, 6-2. The Portuguese sophomore will face ITA's No. 43-ranked Vladica Babic of Oklahoma State tomorrow at 1:15 p.m.
Decker nabbed her first victory over a ranked opponent in her collegiate career and advanced to the Round of 16 after two straight-set victories. Decker began by defeating Iowa's Montana Crawford, 6-0, 6-1. The French freshman topped ITA's No. 102 Fatima Bizhukova of Wichita State, 6-2, 6-3, and moved to 4-4 in her K-State career. Decker will face Oklahoma State's Marina Guinart tomorrow at noon.
Turco and Decker will represent K-State as its lone doubles pairing in the Round of 16 after defeating Aliona Ladutska and Grace Ball of UMKC, 8-2. The tandem will face ITA's ninth-ranked Leolia Jeanjean and Giulia Pairone of Arkansas.
The Cats finished the day 1-2 in doubles play. Costamagna and Linares fell to Tutum Rice and Jackie Carr of Arkansas, 8-3. Maffei and Mesquita dropped its round of 32 match against Minnesota's River Hart and Caroline Ryba, 8-1.
After jumping out to an early lead, Turco finished 1-1 on the day, falling narrowly in the Round of 32 to Arkansas' 32nd-ranked and tournament top-seed Ana Oparenovic, 6-1, 4-6, 2-6. Turco began by defeating Jeannie Lozowski in straight sets, 6-2, 6-0. The native of Italy is now 7-2 in her freshman singles campaign.
Carolina Costamagna defeated WSU's Sarvinoz Saidhujaeva in straight sets, 6-3, 6-0. The lone senior for the Cats fell to Caroline Ryba of Minnesota, 3-6, 4-6. Costamagna is now 6-3 this season in singles play.
Rosanna Maffei made it to the Round of 32 before falling to No. 113 Katarina Stresnakova of Oklahoma State, 2-6, 3-6. The native of Atripalda, Italy, defeated Tulsa's Alexandrina Chinikova, 6-3, 6-1, to begin the day.
Maria Linares fell in the Round of 64 to Kansas' Debbie Vogasari. The freshman takes the first loss of her career, moving to 5-1 to start her career.
K-State finished the day 7-4 in singles play.
