Texas Tech Outlasts K-State in Five Sets Saturday

Oct 28, 2017 | Volleyball

LUBBOCK, Texas – Despite career-best defensive efforts from five different players, the K-State volleyball team fell in five sets (18-25, 25-17, 25-17, 23-25, 12-15) to Texas Tech at United Supermarkets Arena Saturday afternoon.

K-State (9-14, 2-8 Big 12) held advantages in total kills, hitting percentage, blocks and digs, however Texas Tech (14-9, 3-7 Big 12) was able to erase the Wildcats' 2-1 lead and split the season series, ending the Cats' seven-match winning streak against the Red Raiders.

In the decisive fifth set, Texas Tech had a five-point edge as the teams changed ends. K-State clawed back to tie the score at 12 but were unable to claim the lead and Tech finished the match by scoring the final three points.

The Wildcat defense recorded a season-high 19 team blocks and 109 digs, limiting TTU to a.100 team efficiency (52 kills, 31 errors, 209 total attempts). K-State had a 60-52 edge in total kills and posted 12 more blocks and nine more digs than the Red Raiders.

Vogel, a senior opposite, registered 12 kills and a career-high 29 digs for her 30th career double-double. Junior middle blocker Macy Flowers turned in the first 10-block match by a Wildcat this season with a career-best 13. Reilly Killeen, a junior libero, matched Vogel's 29 digs - also a career high.

Alongside Vogel, Kylee Zumach (12), Brynn Carlson (11) and Peyton Williams (10) all reached double-digit kills. Six Wildcats turned in at least six kills on the day.

Carlson posted career highs with nine digs and eight blocks. Zumach set a career best with six blocks and matched her high with three aces – her third straight match recording multiple service aces. Flowers paced the squad in efficiency at .381, recording nine kills on 21 swings with one error.

K-State held a lead for much of the opening set and led by as many as three as the Wildcats recorded four kills on their first five swings. The Red Raiders leveled the score five different times before a 4-0 run handed them their first lead of the match at 16-15. From there, TTU went on an 11-3 run to close Set 1. Flowers and Vogel each had three kills without an error to lead the K-State offense. Vogel also registered eight digs in the frame.

Separate runs of four, five and seven points helped open a 10-point Wildcat lead in the second set. Vogel added five more kills without an error in set while the K-State defense picked up four blocks in forcing Texas Tech into nine attacking errors against just seven kills (-.050). Zumach served up three aces as part of K-State's 7-0 run before she and Flowers combined to stuff a Red Raider attack to seal the set victory.

In Set 3, K-State never trailed on its way to a resounding 25-17 win as it hit .341 (18k-4e-41ta) while holding Tech to .044 (8k-6e-45ta). K-State picked up five more team blocks, led by Flowers who contributed three in the set. A 6-1 stretch midway through the set pushed the Wildcat lead to 20-12 and the Cats finished from there.

Texas Tech led by as many as 10 points (14-4) in the fourth set before a late K-State flurry cut the Red Raider lead to a single point at 24-23. K-State's push included six straight points as part of a 10-1 run, helped fueled by Flowers, who picked up five blocks in the frame on her way to her career-best output. Carlson and Zumach each had three kills in Set 4.

K-State fell behind 8-3 in the final set before battling back and eventually equaled the score at 12. Texas Tech ended the match by scoring the final three points, capped by an ace from Kate Klepetka. K-State picked up seven kills against one error on 23 swings (.261) in the fifth set while Tech had nine kills on 27 attacks and three errors (.222). TTU had three of its seven aces in the final set.

Texas Tech was led by Sarah Redding and her 14 kills. Klepetka had a match-high 32 digs to lead four Red Raiders in double figures.

K-State returns home to Ahearn Field House on Wednesday, November 1 to face No. 3 Texas (16-2, 8-0 Big 12). The match with the Longhorns will be broadcast nationally on ESPNU and begin at 8 p.m. CT.
