Cats Snap Streak with Sweep of Oklahoma Saturday

Nov 18, 2017 | Volleyball

MANHATTAN, Kan. – K-State hit over .300, tied its season high with eight service aces and recorded 12 team blocks on its way to a straight-set victory over Oklahoma, 25-22, 25-22, 25-14, Saturday night at Ahearn Field House, snapping a nine-match losing streak.

"It feels good to play a little more consistent," said head coach Suzie Fritz. "I was very pleased with our serving. I think our serving led to our ability to be good at the net. Serve, kind of, equaled block, a little bit. We were able to limit some options for [Oklahoma], and then take advantage of that with our size and physicality at the net.

"I thought we managed the ebbs and flows of the match, maybe a little bit better than we did in the last match, and we minimized our errors. We played a little bit more consistently, although, I still think we're a work in progress."

K-State (10-18, 3-12 Big 12) had a season-low nine attacking errors in posting its highest team attacking efficiency (.302) in 19 matches. Five Wildcats hit over .250, led by redshirt freshman middle blocker Peyton Williams (.467) and redshirt junior Kylee Zumach (.389).

The Cats used 12 team blocks, paced by middle blocker Macy Flowers' seven, to limit Oklahoma (7-20, 4-10 Big 12) to a .085 team percentage, including forcing OU into more errors (11) than it had kills (8) in Set 3.

"We were trying to generate more transition kill production and I thought we were really good there," Fritz added. "And I was very pleased with our opponent attack efficiency. We really did some nice stuff at the net and held them to low hitting efficiency. The combination of that and our serve was really what stood out."

Four different Wildcats – Brynn Carlson, Flowers, Reilly Killeen and Brooke Smith – picked up two aces in helping K-State to a season sweep of the Sooners for the third straight season.

Zumach, along with sophomore middle blocker Elle Sandbothe, spearheaded the Wildcat offense with eight kills apiece. Zumach has led or shared the team lead in kills 18 times this season, including each of the last seven matches. Williams added seven kills, with four coming in the opening set.

Four players in addition to Flowers, had at least three blocks: Williams (4), Zsofia Gyimes (3), Sandbothe (3) and Zumach (3). It is the third consecutive match the Wildcat defense has posted double-figure blocks and ninth time this season.

K-State kept the Sooners below a .100 hitting percentage in the match's final two sets, and despite allowing OU to hit .312 in the opening set, the Cats withstood a set that held six lead changes and 10 tied scores. K-State trailed by a point at 22-21 but ran off the final four points, including two kills by Zumach and an ace from Smith. Junior Alyssa Schultejans and Williams each had four kills in the frame.

In Set 2, the Wildcats held the lead throughout their 25-22 set victory. Two separate four-point scoring runs, the first included three consecutive blocks from Flowers, handed the Cats a two-sets-to-none lead. Flowers collected five of her seven blocks in the set, as OU hit .049 in the second game.

A 12-1 Wildcat run, with a string of nine consecutive points, opened a 12-2 lead in the final set. K-State would hit a match-high .417 in Set 3 and limit the Sooners to a negative efficiency in picking up its first three-set victory since the season's opening weekend.

Killeen, a junior libero, was the lone Wildcat to reach double-figure digs with 10, her 14th straight match with 10 or more. Setter Sarah Dixon had a team-best 18 assists while Smith added 12.

K-State will finish its regular-season schedule and honor senior Bryna Vogel on its annual Senior Night against West Virginia on Wednesday, November 22. The matchup with the Mountaineers will air on COX Channel Kansas and stream live and free on K-StateHD.TV. Fans can also listen to Rob Voelker call the action on KMAN 1350 AM, 93.3 FM and streaming live on k-statesports.com.
