Wildcats Start Indoor Season Strong at Carol Robinson Winter Pentathlon

Dec 08, 2017 | Track & Field

MANHATTAN, Kan. – The 2017-18 indoor track and field season got off to a strong start for the Wildcats on Friday, as four K-State pentathletes competed in the Carol Robinson Winter Pentathlon at Ahearn Fieldhouse.

Representing the Wildcats in the pentathlon events, sophomore Nina Schultz finished the pentathlon in second place with 4,083 points, followed by sophomore Ariel Okorie with 3,901 points and Lauren Taubert in fourth place with 3,792 points. Both Taubert and Okorie notched new indoor career highs with their performances on Friday, including personal bests in several of the events. In the men's pentathlon senior Max Estill finished fourth overall, tallying 3,287 points behind strong performances in the men's high jump and the 60 meter hurdles.

"Overall everyone is kind of where we want them to be," Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Cliff Rovelto said. "They performed almost if not better than they did last year, to see that in December is obviously a good sign."

The trio of Wildcat sophomores including Schultz, Okorie and Taubert put up strong performances in the pentathlon events. In the first event of the day, the Wildcat women took the top three spots in the 60-meter hurdles where Okorie led the charge with a time of 8.57.

Following a strong start in the hurdles, Schultz went on to win the high jump with a jump of 1.75m/5-8.75, while Okorie and Taubert both set new personal bests in the event with a jump of 1.66m/5-5.25. All three Wildcats were positioned near the top of the pentathlon leaderboard heading into the final events.

In the final event, the 800-meter run, the Wildcats were positioned second through fourth in the pentathlon standings, trailing only Kennesaw State's Jordan Gray. In the 800-meter run, Taubert finished second followed by a personal best 2:25.67 by Okorie and a fourth place finish by Schultz to finish the women's pentathlon events.

In the men's pentathlon, Estill had a solid outing as he was positioned in third place through two events, where he performed well in the 60 meter hurdles and the long jump. In the men's high jump, Estill approached his career-best by jumping 1.91m/6-3.25 to take fourth place in the event.

In the final event of the evening, Estill ran a 3:01.19 in the 1000-meter run, finishing fifth overall and earning a fourth-place finish in the event with 3,287 points.

"Max [Estill] did a good job throughout the day," Rovelto said. "There were a few places where we think he could have gotten some more points, but he executed pretty well."

Following Friday's Pentathlon competition, teams will return to action on Saturday with the K-State Winter Invitational. The field events will begin at 9:30 a.m. with the women's weight throw, while the track events begin at 1:00 p.m. with the start of the women's 1000-meter run.
