AUSTIN, Texas – For the second consecutive game, the Kansas State baseball team was unable to solve Texas' pitching as it fell 5-0 at UFCU Disch-Falk Field on Saturday.
Texas starting pitcher Morgan Cooper set career highs in innings (8.0) and strikeouts (11) on his way to his third win of the season. The Longhorns (16-10, 2-3 Big 12) have shut out K-State (15-8, 0-2) in each of the first two games of the series.
K-State managed just three hits in the game – two off Cooper – and none for extra bases. Hanz Harker led off the third inning with a single to right and made it to second with nobody out after a throwing error to represent the Wildcats' best scoring opportunity.
K-State had just five at-bats in the game with a runner in scoring position (0-for-5) and were shutout in consecutive games for the first time since 2004.
Wildcat starter Parker Rigler, coming off three straight quality starts, went 3 2/3 innings and allowed three runs on five hits and walked a career-high six batters in the loss. Four of those walks came in the bottom of the second inning that gave Texas a 1-0. The senior southpaw escaped the bases-loaded jam with just one run allowed.
Texas scratched across two more runs in the fourth, one in the sixth and one in the eighth, highlighted by an RBI double off the bat of first baseman Kacy Clemens.
The Longhorns left the bases loaded in the second, third and sixth innings on their way to stranding a season-high 16 baserunners. UT hit just .133 (2-for-15) with runners in scoring position
Bryce Ward and Jared Marolf each threw two innings of relief and each allowed one earned run.
Seniors Jake Scudder and Steve Serratore were responsible for two of the Cats' three hits. Scudder extended his career-best on-base streak to 17 games.
