AUSTIN, Texas – Sunday afternoon's series finale between Kansas State and Texas saw three lead changes but a seventh-inning home run by Kody Clemens gave the Longhorns a 6-5 victory and a series sweep at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.
K-State (15-9, 0-3 Big 12) scored four runs in the fifth inning that erased a 2-0 hole to take its first lead of the series. RBI singles by Will Brennan and Jake Scudder in the inning pushed across the first Wildcats runs of the conference-opening series.
Texas (17-10, 3-3) responded with three of its own in the home half of the sixth thanks to a Travis Jones bases-loaded double that cleared the bases and handed the Longhorns a 5-4 lead.
In the next half inning, the Cats scratched a run across by way of an RBI fielder's choice from Brennan, his second run driven in of the ballgame.
K-State's lead, however, would be short lived. With two outs, Clemens laced a 3-1 pitch from lefty Jordan Floyd over the left-field fence for the go-ahead homer. Texas' sixth run proved to be enough as the Cats were unable to score in the final two frames.
Wildcat starter Brogan Heinen pitched into the fourth inning, only allowing one hit, but walked four and surrendered one earned run.
Senior right-hander Nick Jones threw a perfect inning of relief of Heinen in the fourth before giving way to sophomore Mitch Zubradt.
Zubradt found trouble in the sixth inning as he walked back-to-back UT hitters to load the bases, leaving open the opportunity for Jones to rip his three-run double to left field that gave Texas its second lead of the game.
In the game, K-State pitchers combined to walk six and hit two Longhorn batters.
Floyd tossed a season-high 2 2/3 innings and suffered the loss after giving up Clemens' homer.
Cameron Thompson tallied three infield singles and Jake Wodtke added a pair of hits as each had multi-hit efforts. Thompson leads the team with 13 multi-hit games on the season. K-State out-hit Texas in the game, 8-7.
Brenna's two-RBI day was the best by any Cat and the second multiple-RBI game of his career.
The Cats looked as if they were going to take a 2-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning, but UT left fielder Tate Shaw robbed a home run off the bat of K-State designated hitter Trent McMaster.
K-State is swept by Texas on the road for the second straight time and for the third time in its last four trips to Austin.
K-State heads to Lincoln, Nebraska, to take on the Nebraska Huskers on Tuesday at Hawks Field at Haymarket Mark. First pitch between the Wildcats and Huskers is set for 6:30 p.m., and can be heard on KMAN 1350 AM, 93.3 FM and streaming free at k-statesports.com.
