3V8 Claims Silver Medal, 2V8 Takes Bronze at Sunshine State Invitational

SUNSHINE STATE INVITATIONAL
MANHATTAN, Kan. – The Kansas State women’s rowing team made its first-ever trip to the state of Florida a memorable one, as the team’s 2V8 and 3V8 each claimed medals after a successful two days of racing at the Sunshine State Invitational in Sarasota, Florida.
K-State’s 3V8 headlined the weekend with a silver medal in Saturday’s finals, while the 2V8 recorded a bronze-medal finish in its final race of the weekend. The 2V4 finished in fourth place overall, while the 1V8 and 1V4 each recorded fifth-place finishes.
“The team is coming away from this weekend’s regatta learning a lot more,” head coach Patrick Sweeney said. “We are progressing. I think there is a lot more to come from this team. The girls learned a lot. It was a great learning experience for everyone.”
The Wildcats’ 3V8 showed consistency in its performance over the two-day regatta, posting a time of 6:57.04 in its heat on Friday to earn a lane five assignment in Saturday’s final. In the final, the boat, made up of six underclassmen, maintained its second-place position after crossing the finish line in 7:02.7, just over three seconds behind first-place finisher Alabama, who won the race with a time of 6:59.2.
The 2V8 also had a successful weekend in the Sunshine State, recording two top-three finishes over the weekend. The boat took second in Friday’s heat with a time of 6:51.9 in an extremely competitive race which saw them finish four tenths of a second behind Miami’s 2V8 who won with a time of 6:51.5. Racing in lane five in Saturday’s final, the boat posted a time of 6:51.1 to earn the bronze medal behind hosts UCF, the race winner, and Miami.
“Both the 3V8 and 2V8 are comprised of a lot of the younger girls,” Sweeney said about the two boats that medaled. “I think they are really starting to learn what racing is all about. Both boats are stepping up to the task really well, which bodes well for us.”
After recording a heat time of 6:48.0 on Friday, the 1V8 bounced back from a sluggish start to the regatta in impressive fashion during the finals, taking fifth place overall with a time of 6:41.6, a seven-second improvement from its time on the previous day of competition.
“The 1V8 raced well after not having a good heat yesterday,” Sweeney noted. “Today, they raced at the level we were looking for. They are closing in on Tulsa, which we were looking for at this meet. I think they have more speed in them. If they keep improving like they are, they will find that speed”
Both the 1V4 and 2V4 finished in the top-five in the finals on Saturday as the 2V4 claimed fourth place after crossing the finish line in 7:50.0 and the 1V4 took fifth place with a time of 7:47.6.
“The 1V4 and 2V4 are finding their strides,” Sweeney added about the two boats. “Both boats are learning that they need to go harder in the middle of the race. Overall, I was pleased with how they raced this weekend and I think they will figure out the middle of the race as the season progresses.”
K-State now turns its attention to the inaugural Big 12 Dual in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, where the Wildcats will have the opportunity to face the majority of its conference rivals for the first time this season.
“Next week is going to be difficult,” Sweeney said about the conference showdown. “We have to keep that in perspective. We are looking forward to an extremely competitive day of competition against the other schools in our conference.”
The Big 12 conference matchup is set for April 8 and is slated to begin at 8:15 a.m. when the Wildcats go head-to-head with the Texas Longhorns.
