Apr 28, 2017 | Volleyball
MANHATTAN, Kan. – Featuring eight NCAA Tournament teams and 12 home matches, the complete 2017 Kansas State volleyball schedule was announced by head coach Suzie Fritz Friday.
K-State will square off with three teams that finished the 2016 season ranked in the top five of the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) top 25 poll and two teams that qualified for last season’s NCAA Final Four (Nebraska, Texas).
The Wildcats’ 2017 season will open in Corvallis, Oregon, on August 25-26 at a tournament hosted by Oregon State. The Cats will meet Pacific of the West Coast Conference, Idaho of the Big Sky and the Beavers of Oregon State. K-State last played at OSU in 1994.
K-State will open its home campaign the following weekend with the K-State Invitational (August 31-September 2) and will welcome in Arkansas, Syracuse and Wisconsin. K-State defeated Arkansas (3-0) in Fayetteville a season ago and fell to Wisconsin (0-3) in last year’s season-opening tournament in Hawaii. The Badgers reached the Regional Final and finished 2016 ranked No. 3 in the AVCA poll.
The Cats’ third non-conference tournament will take them to the campus of Georgia Tech in Atlanta, Georgia. There, K-State will square off with North Florida, Xavier and GT. The Yellow Jackets visited Manhattan last season, as K-State took a five-set decision in Bramlage Coliseum.
After a Tuesday-night matchup with UMKC in Ahearn Field House, K-State heads to Omaha for its final non-conference action in the Omaha Challenge, where two NCAA Tournament teams await the Wildcats in Nebraska and Northern Iowa in addition to the host Mavericks of Omaha. The Huskers reached the 2016 Final Four before falling to Texas.
K-State begins its double round-robin Big 12 slate on Wednesday, September 20 at Oklahoma before hosting in-state rival Kansas on Saturday, September 23. To round out the month of September, the Wildcats head to Austin to meet national runner-up Texas on Saturday, September, 30.
October sees home conference matches with Texas Tech (October 7), Baylor (October 14) and Iowa State (October 25). Road matches in the month include at TCU (October 4), at Iowa State (October 11), at West Virginia (October 21) and at Texas Tech (October 28).
K-State finishes the regular season with four home matches in its last six, including back-to-back home matches against Oklahoma (November 18) and West Virginia (November 22) to close out conference play. In November, the Wildcats are also home vs. Texas on November 1 and TCU on November 11. K-State will also travel to KU on November 8 and to Waco to battle Baylor on November 15.
Including conference matches, K-State was a combined 12-8 (.600) against teams on its schedule it faced in 2016.
Season tickets for the 2017 campaign, which start at $2 per match, will go on sale Monday, May 1 through the K-State Athletics Ticket Office in Bramlage Coliseum.
K-State is set to return 10 letterwinners from last year’s NCAA Tournament team, including senior Bryna Vogel, junior Kylee Zumach and sophomore Elle Sandbothe. The Cats made their fifth trip to the postseason in the last six seasons and just completed their 12th 20-win season under Fritz.
