Cats Fall in Straight Sets at No. 5 Texas
Sep 30, 2017 | Volleyball
AUSTIN, Texas – Redshirt junior outside hitter Kylee Zumach recorded a team-best 14 kills as she eclipsed the 900-kill mark in her career, but the Kansas State volleyball team fell in straight sets (17-25, 12-25, 16-25) to the fifth-ranked Texas Longhorns Saturday at Gregory Gymnasium.
It was the 10th time that Zumach, a native of Buffalo, Minnesota, was the Wildcats' kill leader – and 15th time in double-figures – in 16 matches this season. Now at 902 career kills, she is the team's active leader in the category.
K-State (8-8, 1-2 Big 12) never led at any point in the match and failed to record a team block. Texas (11-2, 3-0 Big 12) hit .494 and committed just two attacking errors in holding a 46-32 edge in total kills. The Cats' loss is their 28th straight against the Longhorns, dating back to 2003.
Junior outside hitter Alyssa Schultejans posted eight kills and senior opposite Bryna Vogel added a half dozen while hitting a team-high .308. Junior libero Reilly Killen led the Wildcats with 11 digs. Setters Brooke Smith and Sarah Dixon handed out 13 and 12 assists, respectively, while Dixon also had nine digs.
Texas' Micaya White led her side with 14 kills and 10 digs. Freshman Lexi Sun was the other Longhorn to reach double-figures, adding 10 kills. Libero Cat McCoy registered a match-high 18 digs.
Despite K-State hitting .375 in the opening set, the Longhorns led from start to finish as they registered 17 kills without an error (.531). The Wildcats were unable to dig out of an early 8-2 hole, even after a 6-2 run midway through the set that cut the UT lead to 16-11. The Cats had six service errors compared to just one ace. Zumach led all players in the frame with six kills on 12 swings (.417).
Following just two team attacking errors in Set 1, K-State had 10 in the second game to go with seven kills (-.088), aided by seven Texas blocks in the set. Texas scored seven of the set's first nine points and allowed K-State to score back-to-back points just once. An 8-1 Longhorn run broke open the set, handing UT an 11-point lead at 18-7. Schultejans had three kills for the Cats while Zumach added two more.
Much like the match's first two sets, Texas never relinquished its lead in the final game. UT jumped out to a quick 5-1 lead, which swelled to as much as 10 late in the set before the Longhorns took a 25-16 decision. K-State hit .167 (11k-5e-36ta) in the final set and Zumach added six more kills on 15 swings, finishing with a .270 hitting percentage.
Texas finished with 9.0 team blocks and held K-State without a block for the first time all season. Smith and Zumach tallied the only service aces in the match.
K-State will play its second straight conference road match in front of a national television audience on ESPNU, as it heads to Forth Worth to take on TCU (8-6, 0-3 Big 12) on Wednesday, October 4 at 8 p.m. CT. Fans can listen to Rob Voelker call the action on KMAN 1350 AM, 93.3 FM and live audio streaming on K-StateSports.com.
