K-State Claims First KU-KSU-WSU Triangular Trophy Since 2015
Jan 13, 2018 | Track & Field
MANHATTAN, Kan. – The K-State Track and Field team used a total team effort to claim the fourth annual KU-KSU-WSU Triangular Trophy on Saturday, as the men's and women's team combined to total 230 points, defeating Kansas (225.5) and Wichita State (174.5) for the first time since 2015.
Saturday's victory evens the series between K-State and Kansas in the Triangular meet, as the Wildcats claimed the inaugural KU-KSU-WSU Triangular meet at Ahearn Fieldhouse in 2015, while Kansas claimed victories in 2016 and 2017.
Sophomore Nina Schultz claimed the High Point Scorer honors, totaling 15.25 points in the meet. A Wildcat has now won the High Point Award each of the last four years, with Wurrie Njadoe winning it in 2017 and Akela Jones in 2016 and 2015.
"I think we had some really strong performances," Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Cliff Rovelto said. "We had some individuals with lifetime personal bests. At this point of the year, that is pretty good, so there were some really good things from today."
Schultz, a native of New Westminster, Canada, was victorious in both the women's 60-meter hurdles and the women's high jump. In the 60-meter hurdles, Schultz edged fellow Wildcat, Ariel Okorie, with a time of 8.35 to finish first overall. Okorie went on to finish second with a time of 8.56, earning K-State an additional five points.
"Everything went pretty decent today, at this point in the season, technically I was very sound," Schultz said of her performance.
In addition to Schultz's High Point honor, it was a memorable day for freshman Tejaswin Shankar, who competed in the men's high jump for the first time in his collegiate career, where he won the event with a height of 2.18m/7-01.75, which also tied the Indian National Indoor Record in the event. Shankar was joined by junior NaTron Gipson, who returned with a solid performance by reaching 2.15m/7-00.5 to earn second place.
On the track, senior Terrell Smith had a record setting day in both the 60-meter dash and 200-meter dash. Smith set a tone early in the 60-meter dash by tying a meet record of 6.75, which was previously set by Aaron Thompson (Kansas) in 2006. Smith continued his impressive day in the men's 200-meter dash, where he bested the meet record of 21.38, replacing it with a new meet record of 21.27.
"My finish in each race was wonderful, I felt like I pushed it through there pretty good," Smith said of his record-breaking performance. "The competition was just ecstatic, I love the feeling of competing against the fellow Kansas schools."
The Wildcats jumped out to a hot start, behind back-to-back wins in the women's and men's weight throws. In the women's weight throw, sophomore Helene Ingvaldsen set a series of personal bests on her first and second throw, which guide her to a new personal record of 20.32m/66-08 and the event title.
In the men's weight throw, senior Mitch Dixon overcame a foul on his fourth attempt, and bounced back with a throw of 20.99m/68-10.75 to set a new personal best and to win the event. Dixon's new personal best marks the third consecutive meet in which he tossed a career-high, moving him closer the 21-meter mark.
In the shot put ring, senior Jess St. John continued her win-streak in the women's shot put. On her third throw, she heaved a new personal record of 16.04m/52-07.75, which went onto win the event by over one meter. St. John has now won the women's shot put in three consecutive meets, as she currently holds the sixth-best mark in the women's shot put in K-State history.
Sophomore Lauren Taubert was able to make an impact on the track in the women's 800-meter run, where she won the race in 2:15.49, also setting a new personal best by nearly five seconds. She set a new personal best in the pentathlon earlier this season at the K-State Winter Pentathlon, and is also making an impact in individual events.
Narrowly leading over Kansas, the Wildcats leaned on the results from the 3,000-meter run and the triple jump. In the men's 3000-meter race, senior Colton Donahue came through with a first-place finish in 8:25.88, earning seven points to add to the Wildcats' total. In the women's triple jump, junior Shardia Lawrence sealed the Wildcat victory by finishing in first place with a best jump of 12.59m/41-03.75.
In addition to the memorable performances on the track, K-State Track and Field honored long-time Track and Field announcer Carol Swenson by inducting him into the K-State Track and Field Hall of Fame. Swenson has served as an announcer for K-State, Big 12 and high school meets for over a decade, and has made a great impact on the track and field community.
Following Saturday's action, the K-State Track and Field team hits the road to compete in the Larry Wieczorek Invitational in Iowa City, Iowa from January 19th-20th. K-State will return home to Ahearn Fieldhouse on February 2nd where they will host the DeLoss Dodds Invitational.
