IOWA CITY, Iowa?– On Friday, all three K-State doubles teams walked away with victories in the Round of 64 at the Intercollegiate Tennis Assocation (ITA) Central Regional Championship hosted at the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Complex.
"We had a good day," head coach Jordan Smith said. "Coming out and winning all of our doubles matches was a great start to the tournament. I'm glad to see that we're making solid progress in doubles. One of our main focuses was to play with a lot of passion and keeping our patterns simple. We need to continue working on our execution, but I was very pleased with our start. All of our players did well."
The Wildcat freshmen duo of Maria Ponomareva and Ioana Gheorghita defeated Oral Roberts' Valentina Gisbert and Andrea Vasilijevic, 8-4, while sophomores Margot Decker and Maria Linares followed suit with an 8-2 win over Nebraska's Marina Cozac and Elizabeth Gould.
Junior Ines Mesquita and sophomore Anna Turco went up against the Huskers' Hayley Haakenstaad and Claire Reifeis, winning, 8-6.
All three doubles tandems move on to the Round of 32 Saturday, scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. Singles action is also set to kick off Saturday, with the Round of 128 starting at 10 a.m.
