K-State Finishes 6th at Big 12 Match Play Tournament
Oct 14, 2018 | Men's Golf
HOCKLEY, Texas – The Kansas State men's golf team dropped both head-to-head matchups during Sunday's final day of the Big 12 Match Play Tournament, falling to Baylor in the morning and TCU in the afternoon. However, with the Wildcats' solid play over the last three days, K-State finished in sixth place overall after coming in as the No. 10 seed.
The Wildcats lost 0-4-2 to the eventual champion Baylor Bears during the morning session on Sunday. Sophomore Kyle Vance and freshman Will Hopkins both tied in their head to head matchups. Kansas State finished pool play in third place in Pool B with four points.
Following the morning session, K-State fell just short of TCU in the fifth-place match, losing a 3-2-1 decision. The Wildcats received strong efforts from senior Jeremy Gandon, who won 6&5, and junior Jacob Eklund, who won a 3&2match.
"We just didn't make the putts we needed to make today," head coach Grant Robbins said. "Baylor played extremely well, and you're not going to beat a team like that with pars. We had plenty of chances against TCU but weren't able to close on the last couple of holes.
"I saw a lot of growth in our team this week," Robbins continued. "This was a great learning experience. Going head to head against some of the best teams in the country, we were able to see firsthand the level we need to get to. We are a very good ball-striking team, but for us to take the next step we have to get better on and around the greens. That's the difference right now. We have some competitive guys. We just have to keep working and keep getting better."
The Wildcats return to action on October 27-28 for the Steelwood Collegiate Invitational in Loxley, Alabama, in what will be their final tournament of the fall season.
