K-State Rowing to Race at Jayhawk Jamboree on Sunday
Oct 18, 2018 | Rowing
MANHATTAN, Kan. – The Kansas State women's rowing team is set to compete in their sole race of the fall season this weekend, as the Wildcats travel to Lawrence, Kansas to compete in the Jayhawk Jamboree on the Kansas River at Burcham Park on Sunday.
"It's a good change of pace. It's a change of environment, it's fun to see the other crews. But it's really a change of pace in the training," Head Coach Patrick Sweeney said. "The team is in good physical shape right now, and technically they're rowing pretty well, so this race is essentially a break in the training they have been doing."
Sunday's regatta marks the first and only competition of the fall season for the Wildcats, as the team continues to prepare for the spring season. Sunday's competition also marks the sixth consecutive year the Wildcats have competed at the Jayhawk Jamboree, dating back to the 2013-14 season.
The Wildcats will have nine boats competing at Sunday's Jayhawk Jamboree, starting with four boats in the collegiate women's four race at 11:00 a.m. K-State will also have one boat a piece in both novice races, as one boat races in the collegiate women's novice eight at 12:00 p.m., followed by a boat in the collegiate women's novice four at 2:00 p.m. The Wildcats will close out the afternoon with three boats in the collegiate women's eight at 3:00 p.m., followed by the collegiate eight's 300-meter springs at 4:00 p.m.
Among the competition at the Jayhawk Jamboree, the Wildcats see Kansas, Tulsa, Oklahoma, Iowa, Creighton and Central Oklahoma, among others.
At last year's Jayhawk Jamboree, the Wildcats closed out their fall season with three medals, including a second-place finish in the women's varsity 8+ 300m sprints.
The Wildcats will look to build upon their training throughout the fall and summer, as K-State gets ready for the spring racing season that begins on Saturday, March 2, 2019 at the Oklahoma Scrimmage. The Wildcats will break up the fall and spring seasons with their winter camp on January 8-19 in Austin, Texas, as the team works to build their spring lineups.
