Maxson Homers, Spurlin Collects Three Hits vs. Hutchinson CC
Oct 19, 2018 | Baseball
MANHATTAN, Kan. – Jordan Maxson hit a solo home run and Will Brennan, Kasey Ford, Brogan Heinen, Alex Belch and Thomas Hughes all logged scoreless outings on the mound on Friday as K-State outscored Hutchinson Community College, 10-7, in a predetermined 12-inning fall exhibition at Tointon Family Stadium.
"I thought we played with good energy and urgency for 12 innings, which can be challenging," head coach Pete Hughes said after the game. "I was very happy with our pitching and catching, free bases were kept at a minimum. This was a major step in our growth as a program. We need to clean up our defense and catch and throw to our abilities all the time, however. We didn't do that today.
"All in all, a great crowd had the chance to watch our program move forward in a positive direction today. It was a beautiful day at Tointon Family Stadium."
Terrence Spurlin led all K-State hitters with three hits as he swatted a double in the third inning to go with a pair of singles. Brennan and Cam Thompson each had a team-high two RBIs, both registered in the Wildcats' six-run second inning.
While Brennan got the start and turned in a 1-2-3 first frame, Ford backed him up with two innings of scoreless baseball. The junior right-hander had two strikeouts to match Brennan, Hughes and Jordan Wicks for the team-high. Ford, Belch, Hughes and Heinen each faced one batter over the minimum in their appearances.
The Wildcats featured four different prearranged lineups as they treated the exhibition like four three-inning games. K-State outscored Hutchinson, 6-0, in the first three-inning competition before the Blue Dragons took the second and third games, 2-1 and 5-3, respectively. Neither side scored a run in the 10th through 12th inning.
K-State will play its three-game intrasquad Fall World Series next weekend, with game one on Thursday, October 25 at 6 p.m. On Saturday, October 27, the Wildcats will play its inaugural ALS Halloween Game, where the 'Cats will play a shortened game in their Halloween costumes and help raise money for the ALS Association. Each of the Fall World Series games and the ALS Halloween Game feature free admission.
Innings 1-3: K-State, 6-0
K-State scored all six of its runs in the second inning with two outs as Hughes started it all with a bases-loaded hit by pitch and was followed by two-RBI singles from Brennan and Thompson.
After the Wildcats loaded the bases with a leadoff walk by Maxson, hit by pitch by Zach Kokoska, and a single by Spurlin, Hutchinson starter LJ McDonough attempted to stop the K-State rally by striking out Dylan Phillips and inducing a pop out by Caleb Littlejim. However, the hit by pitch drawn by Hughes sparked the crooked inning and was capped by Brennan's single that produced a third run on a throwing error by Hutchinson first baseman Zach Baxley. The inning was ended after Brennan's hit as K-State batted around its order.
On the mound, Brennan fanned the first two batters to start the game before a groundout to third base ended his day. Ford, meanwhile, worked around a one-out double in the second and a leadoff error in the third to turn in his scoreless two innings of work.
Innings 4-6: Hutchinson, 2-1
Hutchinson used a passed ball in fourth and a two-out double in the sixth to score its two runs while Spurlin scored the lone K-State tally on a wild pitch and throwing error by Blue Dragon catcher Max McGuire in the sixth.
K-State's Wicks scattered three hits in his two innings pitched, surrendering the lone unearned run in the fourth. The left-hander surrendered a two-out single in the fourth to Max Satori, who eventually came around on the passed ball after another Hutchinson single. In the fifth, Wicks bounced back from a one-out double by striking out his final two batters faced.
The Wildcats went quietly in the bottom of the fourth despite singles from Rainer Ausmus and Chris Ceballos, but in the sixth, Spurlin opened the inning with his third of the day. The sophomore infielder advanced to second on a groundout, and then scored after a wild pitch allowed him to advance to third before taking home on a throwing error by McGuire.
Innings 7-9: Hutchinson, 5-3
K-State surrendered a run in the seventh on a two-out error before the Blue Dragons scored four runs against Wildcat right-hander Gavin Hinchliffe in the ninth. Hinchliffe, who entered the game to start the inning, saw a frame-opening error turn into four runs as Hutchinson drew two walks and notched two singles to help produce the runs.
Heinen spelled Hinchliffe in the ninth and managed to strand runners at first and third despite a walk to the first batter he faced.
Offensively, the Wildcats scored two of its three runs on a two-error play by Hutchinson centerfielder Jeremiah Ceasar. Littlejim and Hughes began the bottom of the seventh with a single and walk, respectively, before Phillips hit a fly ball to center field with one out. The ball was misplayed by Ceasar, who then bobbled his attempt to pick it up and allowed Littlejim and Hughes to score.
In the eighth, Maxson hit a two-out home run to right-center field off right-hander Zack Firmature for the lone roundtripper of the day for either side.
Innings 10-12: Tied, 0-0
After Heinen recorded a 1-2-3 10th inning, Belch and Hughes followed up by each retiring three of the four batters they faced. Belch allowed an inning-opening double in the 11th, but escaped the situation with a strikeout, groundout and lineout. Hughes, meanwhile, struck out two in the 12th, with the last negating a two-out single.
K-State produced three baserunners in the final three innings, all of which were on walks. Mason Crews had a one-out walk in the 10th, while Joey Martin and Blake Burrows had free passes in the 12th.
