K-State Men Place Fifth at Big 12 Championships

Oct 26, 2018 | Cross Country

AMES, Iowa.– The Kansas State men's and women's cross country teams competed at the Big 12 Championship on Friday, where the K-State men's team earned a fifth-place finish with 162 points, placing three individuals in the top-30 overall at the Iowa State Cross Country Course in Ames, Iowa.

After earning a program-best fourth-place finish the meet a season ago, the K-State men earned consecutive top-five finishes at the meet for the first time in program history. The 162 points scored by the Wildcats on Friday are the fourth-fewest scored at the meet in men's program history.

"On the men's side it was a pretty solid team effort. Last year finishing fourth and losing five seniors I knew we would take a bit of a hit, but we've had some newcomers step up and I am excited for the future. It's something we can really build off of" Head Coach Ryun Godfrey said.

Led by freshman Cooper Schroeder's 22ndplace finish in 24:51.1, senior Joe Gorthy (29th, 25:22.2) and redshirt freshman Ethan Powell (30th, 25:22.2) all placed in the top-30 overall. Running in his first race of the season, Powell put together a strong effort to run with Gorthy, eventually finishing side-by-side.

In addition to the top-30 finishes, freshman Charlie Parrish set a personal best by running a 25:33.9 to place 37th, while sophomore Noah Stevenson set a personal best in 26:33.0 to place 59th. Redshirt freshman Dylan Brenneman put together a good run to finish 51stin 25:57.5, followed by Pierce Flanders (60th, 26:38.3), Kurt Loevenstein (65th, 26:57.5) and Travis Hodge (66th, 26:57.7).

The K-State women placed 10thoverall scoring 240 points and were led by senior Emma Wren, who ran a 21:38.5 to place 37thoverall, followed by a personal best from sophomore Kassidy Johnson, who ran a 21:44.9 to place 43rd

Following Johnson and Wren, sophomore Cara Melgares placed 53rdoverall in 22:04.6, while Cayli Hume competed in her first race of the season, finishing in 22:52.3 to place 72nd. Junior Anna Keeley went on to place 77thin 23:14.3, while sophomore Victoria Robinson placed 88thin 24:44.8.

Leading the team scoring, Iowa State took both the men's and women's titles with 32 and 35 points respectively. In addition to their team titles, Iowa State claimed the individual titles, as Cailie Logue won the women's race in 19:53.8, while Edwin Kurgat won the men's race in 23:21.1.

Following the Big 12 Championships on Friday, the Wildcats will continue their postseason competition on November 9 in Peoria, Illinois, as the Wildcats compete in the NCAA Midwest Regionals at Newman Golf Course, as teams compete for a shot at the NCAA Championships on November 19.

"Last year Emma (Wren) and Cara (Melgares) ran really well. So I think they really want to duplicate that," Godfrey said looking forward to the NCAA Midwest Regional. "Last year our men's team placed 10that Regionals, although that may be tough to match, we are going to do what we can."
