Nov 16, 2018 | Volleyball
MANHATTAN, Kan. – The Big 12 Conference announced the addition of junior Mckenzi Weber to its Academic All-Big 12 First Team Friday, upping K-State volleyball's league-high total of 12 first-team selection – a program record.
Weber, a defensive specialist and Bakery Science and Management major, joins sophomore Brynn Carlson and senior Reilly Killeen with perfect 4.0 GPA, earning her first-career award. K-State represented three of the nine 4.0 GPAs in the league, with the 12 total selections breaking the program's mark of 11 set in 2016.
Joining Carlson, Killeen and Weber on the first team are redshirt junior Sarah Dixon, redshirt senior Devan Fairfield, senior Macy Flowers, senior Zsofia Gyimes, redshirt freshman Brooke Heyne, junior Elle Sandbothe, senior Alyssa Schultejans, redshirt freshman Jacque Smith and redshirt sophomore Peyton Williams.
Fairfield collected the fourth academic all-conference honor of her career and initial first-team selection while Flowers, Gyimes and Schultejans each earn their third selections.
Dixon, Sandbothe and Williams are named to the first team for the second straight year and Carlson, Heyne, Killeen, Smith and Weber each pick up the first honors of their respective careers.
First-team members consist of those who have maintained a 3.20 or better GPA while the second-team selections hold a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA. A total of 67 student-athletes were honored as Academic All-Big 12, with 59 first-team selections and seven members of the second team.
To qualify, student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 20 percent of their team's scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible.
K-State (14-11, 4-10 Big 12) continues its conference slate with the final home match of the regular season against Texas Tech (16-11, 5-8 Big 12). The match will air on ESPN3 and on the ESPN app. Fans can also listen to Rob Voelker call the action on News Radio KMAN (93.3 FM, 1350 AM) and streaming live on K-StateSports.com/watch.
