Zumach’s 21 Kills Power K-State Past TCU
Nov 21, 2018 | Volleyball
FORT WORTH, Texas – Behind a season-high 21 kills by Kylee Zumach and 15 more from Gloria Mutiri, K-State overcame an opening-set loss to upend TCU in four sets, 25-27, 25-23, 25-21, 25-21, at The Rickel in the regular-season finale for both teams.
K-State (15-12, 5-11 Big 12) snapped a four-match losing skid to TCU (15-12, 7-9 Big 12) and handed the Horned Frogs just their third home loss of the season (13-3). The Wildcats also picked up their first win in Fort Worth since 2014.
"After a really rough start, we went down nine and almost pulled off the first game," head coach Suzie Fritz said after the match. "But we hit well over .300 and we sided-out a pretty high rate. Once we stabilized, I thought we played incredibly well. Being able to get a road win and find a way to win the last conference match is nice."
Zumach led all players with her 21 kills while hitting .409, as three Wildcats reached double-digit kills. It marked the redshirt senior's third 20-kill match this season and ninth of her career.
Mutiri, a freshman, hit .419 and produced her third double-double of the season with 11 digs while Brooke Heyne recorded 11 kills.
Setter Sarah Dixon handed out 56 assists, a career high for a four-set match in helping K-State hit .316 and hold a 67-56 edge in total kills.
Senior Macy Flowers and Mutiri each produced four block assists. Seniors Devan Fairfield (16) and Reilly Killeen (13) joined Mutiri with double-figure digs to lead the Cats' defense.
"I thought they all did some pretty nice things," added Fritz. "Macy Flowers always does some special things at the net, but I thought she played really well offensively, as well. We had all of them doing some things to keep us in it. Defensively, there were some really nice plays made in the back row to keep us in the rally and give us an extra swing."
After the first two sets saw 19 ties and 10 lead changes, K-State trailed just once over the day's final two frames. K-State picked up at least 15 kills in each set and hit over .300 in the last three games.
K-State rebounded from an early nine-point deficit and took a 16-15 lead behind an 12-2 run sparked by Zumach's first kill of the match. Another four-point Wildcat scoring run led to a 22-20 lead, but the Frogs scored four of the next five to reach set point. The Cats fought off two set points before TCU closed the extra-point frame. Zumach led all players with seven kills in the opening set while Mutiri had three. Each side hit below .200 in a set that saw 10 tie scores and six lead changes.
Set 2 held nine tied scores as neither team was able to lead by more than three in the set. The Wildcats trailed by a point at 20-19 but tied the match at a set apiece by closing on a 6-3 spurt, capped by a Zumach kill. The defense of K-State limited TCU to a .188 hitting percentage in the set while the Cats managed a .308 efficiency.
The Cats' offense came to life in Set 3, as they registered 16 kills against just one attacking error for a .517 hitting percentage in a wire-to-wire 25-21 win. Mutiri picked up six kills in the set on nine swings (.556) while Zumach added four on seven attacks without an error. K-State added three team blocks, led by two block assists from Mutiri and two from Flowers.
Set 4 saw the Wildcats pick up 20 kills on 39 attacks with four errors (.410). Zumach added six kills to her season-high total while Heyne and Mutiri each picked up four. The Cats closed the match on a 4-1 run after the Frogs closed the K-State lead to a single point at 21-20.
Three Horned Frogs reached double-digit kills, led by Katie Clark's 15 while élan McCall had 14 and Anna Walsh added a dozen. McCall added 16 digs and setter Tori Dilfer had 45 assists.
K-State will await its postseason fate as the NCAA Selection Show is set for Sunday night at 7:30 p.m., on ESPNU.
