Cats Cruise by WVU in Straight Sets Saturday
Nov 03, 2018 | Volleyball
MANHATTAN, Kan. – K-State redshirt freshman Brooke Heyne turned in her first career double-double and the Wildcats produced a .393 hitting percentage in a sweep of West Virginia, 25-12, 25-17, 25-23, Saturday night at Ahearn Field House.
With a season-low seven attacking errors, K-State's (13-9, 3-8 Big 12) offensive efficiency was its highest in a conference match this season and second-highest output of the year. The Cats' defense limited West Virginia (10-14, 2-9 Big 12) to a .154 hitting percentage while forcing the Mountaineers into 20 errors.
"Consistency," head coach Suzie Fritz said of what she liked best about her team's performance. "We've been working really, really hard to find consistency … I thought tonight was a good example of 'good over time.' We were good. We were just good, from start to finish. In every phase, I thought we were good and our personnel played consistently well."
Heyne, who had a team-high 11 kills and 10 digs, hit .450 while senior Alyssa Schultejans added 10 kills and hit at a .308 clip. The Cats out-killed WVU, 40-36, while taking 20 fewer swings than the Mountaineers (104-84), resulting in the hitting efficiency discrepancy.
"I thought they were smart, and their shot selection was really good and purposeful – they challenged the block in productive ways," Fritz said of Heyne and Schultejans. "They did a nice job of not pressing and hitting it where they weren't. What makes Brooke special isn't one thing. What makes her special is she can do a lot of things well.
"Tremendous serving had a lot to do with our ability to point score," Fritz added. "I thought our serving was incredibly disruptive – they were on point and served with tremendous purpose, as well as pace."
K-State collected nine service aces – five of which came in the opening set – while West Virginia managed just two. Schultejans, along with Zsofia Gyimes and Sarah Dixon, each tied for the team lead with two aces.
An early seven-point scoring run helped push the Cats to a 14-4 lead and a 25-12 win in Set 1. Heyne tallied five kills while Elle Sandbothe and Schultejans each added four to help K-State hit .520 (15 kills, 2 errors, 25 attacks).
The Wildcat defense forced West Virginia into as many attacking errors (9) as it had kills for a .000 team efficiency in the second set. An 8-1 spurt by the Wildcats broke a 12-12 tie and opened a 20-13 edge on their way to a 25-17 win. Heyne and freshman Gloria Mutiri led the offense with four kills each and the Cats hit .333 in the frame.
Set 3 saw the Mountaineers threaten to make the score 2-1, as WVU held a 16-11 lead and later had a 22-21 advantage. K-State used a scoring run of five points to level the score at 16 before closing the sweep on a 4-1 stretch, capped by a tandem block by Mutiri and Peyton Williams.
Williams paced the Cats defense with three block assists. Mutiri and Sandbothe each added two.
Dixon dished out 33 assists while collecting eight digs and libero Devan Fairfield and Mutiri equaled Dixon's total of eight digs.
WVU's Katelyn Evans was the only Mountaineers in double-digit kills with 12.
Next up, the Cats take a trip to Austin, Texas, to take on Texas Wednesday at 7 p.m. The matchup with the sixth-ranked Longhorns at Gregory Gymnasium will air on the Longhorn Network and stream live on the ESPN app. Rob Voelker will also be on the call on New Radio KMAN (93.3 FM, 1350 AM) with free, live audio streaming on K-StateSports.com/watch.
