MANHATTAN, Kan. – Former K-State head baseball coaches Dave Baker and Brad Hill were both elected to the Kansas Baseball Hall of Fame and will be inducted on January 26, the organization announced Thursday.
The annual ceremony will take place at LaVela banquet hall in Wichita (6147 East 13th Street North) beginning at noon, as the Kansas Baseball Hall of Fame will induct six new members along with the Cowley College championship teams of 1996-97 and 1997-98.
Baker, from Manhattan, became the first African-American head coach at a Big Eight institution when he was named head coach in 1978. Baker would go on to lead the Wildcats to 137 wins over six seasons (1978-83), including an appearance in the Big Eight Tournament in 1983 - their first since 1977. Four Wildcats were selected in the MLB Draft under Baker's watch.
A native of Galva, Hill ended his 15-year career as the program's all-time winningest head coach with 468 victories to his name (2004-18). A two-time Big 12 and ABCA Midwest Region Coach of the Year, Hill guided K-State to four NCAA Regional berths and its only Super Regional appearance and conference title in 2013.
Hill's tenure saw 82 Wildcats earn All-Big 12 accolades, including conference players of the year Nick Martini (2010) and Ross Kivett (2013). In his 15 seasons at the helm, Hill coached 64 selections in the MLB Draft.
