Hoosiers Shut Out Wildcats Saturday

Feb 17, 2018 | Baseball

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – A pair of Indiana pitchers combined for a two-hit shutout of K-State, as the 17th-ranked Hoosiers defeated the Wildcats 5-0 on the second day of the Brittain Resorts Baseball at the Beach Saturday at TicketReturn.com Field.

K-State (0-2) ended Indiana (1-1) starter Pauly Milto's no-hit bid in the sixth inning, when senior Jake Biller singled to center field. Sophomore left fielder Will Brennan accounted for the Wildcats' second hit in the eighth inning with a single, extending his career-long on-base streak to 25 games.

Biller's single snapped a string of 14 straight Wildcat batters that Milto set down. IU's junior right-hander ended the game going six full innings with five strikeouts and yielded two walks in earning the victory. Freshman left Tommy Sommer tossed the game's final three innings, giving up one hit and one walk with two punch outs for the save.

Indiana broke the game open with a four-run fourth inning, sparked by Logan Sowers' homer on the first pitch he saw in the inning. The first four IU batters reached base safely, as Elijah Dunham doubled down the right field line and Matt Gorski followed that with an RBI single.

The Hoosiers opened the scoring with Dunham's RBI single in the second inning, that scored Sowers, off K-State starter Gabe Littlejim. Littlejim, who took the loss in his Wildcat debut, went five innings, picking up four strikeouts without a walk.

Caleb Littlejim, the younger brother of Gabe, came on in the sixth and tossed two scoreless frames for the Cats. He, along with Jaxon Passino, held Indiana scoreless over the game's final three innings.

In the game, K-State went 0-for-13 with runners on base and 0-3 with runners in scoring position. Indiana was 4-for-17 with runners on base while hitting .250 (2-for-8) with runners in scoring position.

K-State continues the 19th Annual Brittain Resorts Baseball at the Beach on Sunday as it heads to Conway, South Carolina, to challenge host Coastal Carolina at 1:30 p.m. CT, taking on No. 17 Indiana at 11 a.m. CT. Senior righty Justin Heskett will get the ball for the Wildcats and the matchup with the Chanticleers can be heard live on KMAN (93.3 FM, 1350 AM) and streamed free at k-statesports.com.
