Feb 21, 2018 | Track & Field
MANHATTAN, Kan. – The K-State Track and Field team will look to turn in the best performances of a strong indoor season and make a run at some conference hardware this weekend, as the No. 19 ranked Wildcat women and the No. 60 ranked men travel to Ames, Iowa to compete in the Big 12 Indoor Championship on Friday and Saturday at the Lied Recreation Center.
The meet will begin on Friday at 10 a.m. with the start of the women's pentathlon and continues at 3:00 p.m. with the women's weight throw, pole vault and track events. Action will resume on Saturday at 11 a.m. with the first of three final men's heptathlon events.
"Kind of like every major championship, you go into it and for the most part the people that are available have done a good job preparing and are in a pretty good position," Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Cliff Rovelto said.
"We have some people that are going to be competing for a championship. It's a tough conference so they are going to have to be at a personal best or above a personal best level to do well."
Over the course of the season, the Wildcats have registered 25 top-five marks in the Big 12, including four that are the best in the conference entering this weekend's Big 12 Championship. Among them, Nina Schultz holds the best score in the women's pentathlon and long jump, while Helene Ingvaldsen holds the best throw in the women's weight throw and Lukas Koch holds the fastest time in the men's 1,000-meters.
In addition to the top marks of the Big 12, the Wildcats have broken several school records, as senior Mitch Dixon broke the school record in the men's hammer throw with a throw of 21.68m/71-01.75 at the DeLoss Dodds Invitational, breaking the decade-old record of 21.62m/70-11.25 by Coby Cost in 2005.
On the track, senior Terrell Smith of Vicksburg, Miss. has broken his own school record twice this season in the men's 200 meters, with the first coming at the Razorback Invitational, before breaking it again at the Texas Tech Shootout in 20.86.
This weekend's Big 12 Championship also serves as the last chance for the Wildcats to earn bids to the 2018 Indoor NCAA Championship being held on March 9-10 in College Station, Texas. To qualify for the meet, individuals must post a mark in the top-16 of the NCAA this season in their respective event. Entering this weekend's Championship, four Wildcats, including Schultz, Smith, Ingvaldsen and Shardia Lawrence boast marks in the top-16, including Schultz's NCAA leading 4,502 points in the women's pentathlon.
Last year at the Big 12 Indoor Championship, the Wildcat men and women each placed sixth in the team competition, with the men's team earning 71.50 points and the women's team earning 77.50 points, while the Baylor women (129.50 pts.) and the Texas men (123.50 pts.) earned team Big 12 Indoor Championships.
